HA! Good one.
Actually, ever think about all the doodads Papa must get? There are lovely things like this, that can become part of the Vatican's legacy to the world; but man, there must be some, uh, less lovely things, too, when one thinks of it.

Actually, MS, I beleive that Bill Clinton gave JP2 a horribly-tacky picture book ... of JP2 himself! Clinton apparently bought it on a shopcorner in Rome on his way to meet the Pope. But this could be an urban legend... still, it wouldn't surprise me that much.

I read somewhere that Clinton gave JPII a cookbook.
Either way, it's still mighty tacky.

Papa Benedetto was less than impressed by the gift of the "Do it yourself" lamp kit, esp since they forgot to bring the lamp shade.

Inventor shows Pope B16 a new Japanese lamp which is the most energy efficient and non-global warming in the world. One minor glitch, however: no lightbulb or lightshade (no wonder it is so 'green' friendly)

Fr Trigilio,
Koreans don't take kindly to being called Japanese.
That's the President of the Republic of Korea (the most Christian country in Asia) presenting the Pope with a Celadon Maebyong with inlaid cloud and crane design.
Would like to know if it's 12th Century piece or a modern copy. Either way there is nothing cheap about this gift.

inhocdig: It is a lovely vase, it's just that poor Papa looks like this is about the fifteenth one he's seen today. After a while the thrill is gone.
