An emergency usually damages the health system
So...a lack of condoms...is a damage to the health system. Whose health? The condom industry?

Maybe they're just REALLY small tents. Or ponchos. Or maybe their bananas are getting wet.
Or not.

I makes sense just like it did when PP offered free abortions after Sept. 11. None at all.

Somehow, if my village was destroyed, my house was gone, my children needed food and clean water, having the NEED for a condom would be the last thing on my mind...

ooh ooh, I get it - if the Junta government ever lets the actual health aid get there...like, you know, CLEAN WATER, they can use the condoms as water vessels thus eliminating the need for bulky equipment!!

*splutter*
This is just insulting, to assume that these disaster-struck people have the danger of "unsafe sex" at the forefront of their minds! Outrageous.

Interestingly the opposite of Bill Gates' approach---on NPR a few weeks ago, he talked about why his foundation focuses on diseases like TB and malaria that disproportionately affect poor people/poor countries. You're nodding along as he says he funds this research because since these are poor people dying, no one funds it (ie, as opposed to the funding in the US thrown at cures for baldness), and that when you improve a country's basic health, you change everything. Yes! You say, that's great. Then the kicker: so if you make them healthier, they'll have fewer children! Ahh, the meat of the issue--a "humane" way to get these poor folks to stop having so many kids and "get with" the Western contraceptive mindset. Get them to not worry about losing kids to disease (= fewer births), then educate them (= to contracept).

I'm glad that someone else had the some reaction to the Bill Gates NPR interview. I, too, was nodding along with so much that Mr. Gates had to say till he got to explaining that poor people needed to stop having kids if they didn't want to be poor anymore. Great information straight out of the Margaret Sanger gospel of eugenics. I turned off the radio at that point at said a prayer for Bill & Melinda and their foundation.
