William Wordsworth once asked, "What is a Poet?" and his answer was "He is a man speaking to men: a man, it is true, endued with more lively sensibility, more enthusiasm and tenderness, who has a greater knowledge of human nature, and a more comprehensive soul, than are supposed to be common among mankind..."

And of course, one could apply this to commentators as well.

Uh . . . blogging is now a "gendered" issue? Honestly . . . .

This is, as far as I'm concerned, just a sign of creeping fundamentalism in so many places and modes of thinking; fundies are _obsessed_ by notions of the "manly" and the "womanly" in virtually everything. Roll your eyes and go on to the next thing.

Gravatar I haven't read the article in question yet (..I'm printing it as I post)but I had some first impression thoughts.

I'm still new to the blogosphere, but I ventured into the waters with my own blog to ..sort of get involved. Reading other's post was fine but offering up dialogue to counter a point or support a stand, seems more than a 'manly' thing to do. It was a human thing to do.

...and now I also think it a 'saintly' thing to do.

Consider this quote from Francis of Assisi:
"Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."

Gravatar The answer to your question can be solved by a little test...

Can drink beer while doing it? If so it is manly. For instance, you can drink Beer while playing Chess, and Reading Chesterton, you can't drink beer while playing Football, or Giving Birth, therefore they are not manly.

I hope this helped.

Gravatar God Bless the American Papist!

Gravatar Nat doesn't care whether blogging is manly. What matters is that posting in comboxes IS. How can this be proven? Nat is extrememly manly AND posts in comboxes. Next issue.
