What more perfect reminder to Catholics in a democracy gifted with a liberty unforeseen in history -- to use our particular privileges to protect the dignity of human life that our Lord's Incarnation and Theophany to the Nations revealed?

Of course, just because John Allen (who his always trying to portray Pope Benedict more "liberal" than he is) says so, doesn't make it so.
While Pope Benedict may have grown up in a climate in which it wasn't easy for a Catholic Bavarian to unreservedly identify with a Prussian-Protestant dominated German government, there is no doubt (he has often said so) that he is a German patriot. And while he may have admired some of the French theologians of the mid 20th century, I sincerely doubt that he can be said to be "Pro-French" in a general, let alone political way. He certainly has identified the French revolution and the ideas of the French "enlightenment" as some of the main causes of today's crisis of Western society, and also, since they have been adopted by many "liberal"/"progressive" Catholics, the Faith.
