The joke might come off as bad taste if the fella turns up dead (granted, unlikely.)

Yeah, shouldn't we be *praying* for him rather than making fun?

Gravatar See, I thought that would go without saying.

Gravatar He's in all news here in Brazil. He's still missing. Hopefully, they will find him.
Thing is, he was not that cautious. A little after he departed, he called people and said his cellphone battery was low and he needed to learn how to use the GPS so people would be able to find him. I think he wasn't able to set it up. A little before he fell into the water, he called the rescue... but they just found the balloons until now.
Let's hope they will find him.

Gravatar Just watching the TV live now, they didn't find him yet. They said that father de Carli loves radical sports, like jumping out from planes parachuting and something like that. But he made some mistakes in the day he took off.
Even the Air Force is engaged in the search for him now.

Gravatar What an odd story.

I'm praying for a safe return, but it sure does have a humorous slant to it. :-

Gravatar Wrong url... forgive me. ha

Gravatar I do think we are required to show genuine charity to genuine idiots.

Gravatar "Which bishop, exactly, approved this leave of absence?!"

I don't know but Paraguay is next door! By the way, I have been receiving updates from your dad for a couple of years now. Didn't know about the relationship.

Gravatar "I do think we are required to show genuine charity to genuine idiots."

Hear hear!

Gravatar "I do think we are required to show genuine charity to genuine idiots."

Anyone care to explain how that attitude doesn't violate the commands of Our Lord?

Gravatar Jeff, sure. Calling an idiot an idiot is not a violation of anything due. Some people need to hear that they are idiots. Quite likely, in this pc age, no one has ever told them so. And others need to have verified for them that some behavoir is simply idiotic. Woe to the people who cannot say, at least once in a while, what needs to be said. I readily admit that "idiot" is thrown around too often in substantially unverifiable and unfair ways. That does not deprive the rest of us of the right, and at times the duty, of using the description when circumstances warrant. Unless you want to say that no one is ever an idiot, in which case we might as well drop the word from the dictionary. If, oto, you grant that it is possible to be an idiot, what, short of tying yourself to a hundred kiddie balloons and floating over the ocean, would qualify?

Gravatar I. don't. know. No matter how idiotic this guy's stunt was, I am uncomfortable making light of the situation, considering as how he is very likely dead.

This stunt could have earned him a nomination for the Darwin Award, if he hadn't already taken himself out of gene pool at his ordination to the diaconate.

Gravatar I wouldn't say that what he did was smart. But, he was doing it to raise money to raise a place for prayer. Although there are several other ways of collecting money, he used this one. Something he had done at least twice. He was just unlucky of the wind blowing to the ocean. He is original plans were to go inland Brazil.
The search for him continues.A person cannot be lost that way, specially a priest.

Gravatar The money wasted on search/rescue will probably be far greater than any raised.

Gravatar Jeffrey Smith:

If this priest is alive, it's charitable to tell him his stunt was idiotic. If he is dead, pointing out that his stunt was idiotic is not going to hurt his feelings. No one is heaping uncharitable abuse on him. It is also charitable to point out to others that this stunt was idiotic, regardless of the priest's good intentions.

Gravatar "The money wasted on search/rescue will probably be far greater than any raised."... probably not, the military (responsible for the search) would spend that much with or without a missing.
I do agree with Fr.Joe. Everyone in Brazil says he was idiot for doing that in the weather conditions, me too. Brazilian humorists already are saying that, by now, he is in that "Lost" island from the TV series.
I just feel sorry for him...

Gravatar Ahhh... just remembered: a faithful from his parish had a "feeling" or a vision, I don't know, that the was in a certain area. Since the military won't go there, the family is looking for him in the place the guy said now.

Gravatar He was obviously not an Eagle Scout. Because as we all know, scouts should "Be Prepared". Strange story. Let's hope for a positive outcome.
