Interesting rumor. Levada has actually been a pleasent suprise as has been noted here. I am not sure what one would do with Levada. I know the New York rumor, but it doesn't make sense to me. Rocco observes that if Levada is made a Cardinal-bishop, he will have to stay in Rome thus kiling the NYC rumor. It's something to watch for before the Vatican's summer hiatus.
Rocco has said he doubts the Levada to NY rumours. I don't think he said it was impossible. There has been a lot of speculation about curial moves but they have been very slow in coming. Same for the NY and Detroit appointments. Benedict generally makes good moves but he does not make enough of them.
Being a German myself, I don't think that it would be a good idea to have a German pope plus an Austrian a the CDF ... we are a worldwide church, aren't we ?
Second point: Maybe Cardinal Levada would be to old to become archbishop of New York - he's already 71, right ?
The Levada to NYC rumor would be killed if Levada was named a Cardinal-bishop. Thats all I said.
as someone who knows cardinal levada, formerly archbishop of san francisco, we in the bay area were ecstatic that he was given the position at the cdf right after the elevation of ratzinger to pope benedict. levada is a man of heart and soul; well loved in the community; and an american in such a vital post at the vatican. it would be a shame to see him lose his post and sent back to the bay area (although we would welcome him back with loving arms).
