From the internet mass article linked to:
They [the bishops of Brazil] want remote communities and younger worshippers to be able celebrate Mass live over the internet. Celebrants would take communion by placing unleavened bread in front of their computer monitors to be consecrated.
That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard discussed by Church officials. There is no way that it would be valid.
And, with heretical ideas like this, the Brazilian Church authorities wonder why Brazilians are embracing Evangelical Protestantism in droves?
It is time for Pope Benedict to step up to the plate and offer strong leadership. Doing things like claiming on the one hand that Catholic politicans are excommunicated and then suddenly stating they are not excommunicated is sending out mixed messages.
The youth are attracted to orthodoxy and strong conservative leadership.

Ditto to what Paula and Tito said, thanks for the great coverage, Thomas.
It seems the pope is strongly reinforcing the Church's teachings on abortion and sexual ethics to the chagrin of the MSM, and they are trying their best to skew and spin the message.
The following drives me nuts in the Washington Post article "Pope Decries Hedonism to Latin American faithful" that you linked to:
During his trip so far, the 80-year-old Pontiff has firmly reinforced the Church's opposition to abortion and called for a return to traditional family values.
But in a country where sex outside marriage is common, birth control is widely used, and divorce is not frowned upon, his message has had a mixed reception.
"Mixed reception" translation: the reporter of this story disagrees.
In a country where sex outside marriage is common, birth control is widely used, and divorce is not frowned upon, the Pope's message has had a mixed reception.
"This pope is a little too rigid, especially when it comes to issues like marriage," said Elisangela do Nascimento, 33-year-old divorced housewife from Sao Paulo in the crowd.
Out of the hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic young supporters of Catholic teachers, they have to pick the one malcontent to quote, and they have to get the word "rigid" in there.

I proofread but didn't catch one thing: I meant to write "supporters of Catholic teachings", not "teachers."

When asked about the pope's comments regarding possible excommunication of Catholic politicians who support abortion rights, Senator Patrick Leahy (VT) had this to say: "I’ve always thought also that those bishops and archbishops who for decades hid pederasts and are now being protected by the Vatican should be indicted." Isn't it nice that Catholics have such nice representatives from the People's Republic of Vermont? What do you think about such remarks? Email me or post your comments to this blog.
