Or, to paraphrase "A Man For All Seasons":
"Why Joe, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world... but for the U.S.?"

Teresa --
I thought of another line from A Man for All Seasons -- Cardinal Wolseys plaintive cry from his death bed:
"If I had served God...
...one half so well as I've served my King...
...God would not have left me here,
to die in this place."

RC, riiiiiiiight. Let's just get over "that stuff." We should just accept defeat.
Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.
No, we will not acquiesce. Not even when you roll out the lions.

Yeah, let's join with Barack FOCA Obama.
No thanks. I'll stick to the principles I have held throughout this election.

I wonder, and this is out of ignorance, how 'Catholic' was our only Catholic president and did that really manifest itself in his policies?

Pres. elect Obama made it very clear during the campaign that he was not interested in the least in my pro-life Catholic views. I'm sorry but until he is ready to change his pro-death views we cannot set any differences aside
In The Great Heresies, one of the greatest minds of the last century, Hilaire Belloc, put it this way:
The quarrel is between the Church and the anti-Church—the Church of God and anti-God, the Church of Christ and anti-Christ...“The Modern Attack” or “anti-Christ” it is all one; there is a clear issue now joined between the retention of Catholic morals, tradition, and authority on the one side, and the active effort to destroy them on the other. The modern attack will not tolerate us. It will attempt to destroy us. Nor can we tolerate it. We must attempt to destroy it as being the fully equipped and ardent enemy of the Truth by which men live. The duel is to the death.

Irresponsible Citizen.
This has nothing to do with politics.
"Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us."

Sid,
Kennedy was not what we would call a great Catholic, nor were his policies (either great or Catholic).
He was an inexperienced cold war warrior who nearly brought ww3 around by his foolish mistakes. Had he not been assassinated he likely wouldn't have lived much longer anyway due to his horrible health. As a president JFK just wasn't that great.
History would be very different had Old man Kennedy not stolen the election from Nixon (who decided bit to contest the results even though he had clearly won).

Joe will become the Fredo Corleone of the Obama Administration. Getting all the exotic travel jobs- perhaps literally one in Cuba- without responsibility. Rahm Emanuel is the operation's Tom Hagen as Chief of Staff- but with a lot worse attitude. Poor Joe. Just like Ann Richards said about George W. Bush- born with a silver foot in his mouth.

The reason I find "single-issue" folks so off-putting is that they/you (you know who you are) are so fixated on, yes, the very important concern of abortion for us Catholics that you can't see ANY other issues. VP-elect Biden, blind as he has been on this important issue, has brought his Catholic sensitivity to many other areas of human dignity and life, especially concerning women.
For a blog focused on an American dedication to the papacy, has it escaped everyone's notice that our Holy Father sent a personal note of congratulations to President-elect Obama and his family? Judging from the comments above, I don't think many APers plan to follow the pope's example...

Michael- 1. The Holy Father sends nice regards to everybody. He's a nice man.
2. You missed the central issue of what we bloggers and the bishops have been saying- no issue of social justice carries the weight of abortion. If unborn babies can be snuffed at any time, everybody's vulnerable. Issue 1A at all times. Stop dancing around it.
3. Biden, like many of his contemporaries, sold out his heritage for political power. To be well liked and favorably interviewed. No problem. The good news is, he's Vice President. The bad news is, he's out of the loop. Notice the MSM isn't doing much to speculate his responsibilities. I will- play golf, go to funerals. Nice work if you can get it.

Senator Biden visited Tallahassee, FL last Sunday for a rally. I had mixed emotions about him attending mass at my home parish. It happens that our bishop wrote a letter to him after hearing he attended mass at our Co-Cathedral. Here's the letter:

I will resist any attempt by Obama to turn the economy into a socialist quadroplegic.
I will resist any attempt by Obama to get cute with fariness doctrines to muzzle opposition.
I will resist any attempt by Obama to get us involved in an unjust war. Yes, just because he be less likely to go to Iran, doesn't mean he won't commit troops to some boondoggle favored by progressives in classic brutal-dictators-are-fine-as-long-as-they-are-not-
for-free-trade mode.
The list goes on, and I will certainly resist his attempts to enshrine abortion or expand ESCR, euthanasia, homosex normalization, etc.
So thanks Michael for reminding us not to be single-issue. I think we just might be able to walk and chew gum at the same time after all.

Ugh. Same crap on Vomitus Nova. It wasn't a "Good job, buddy! You know I was pulling for you, man!" note. Gimme a break.
Did you notice how well he treated Pres. Bush? Must mean that him and Bush are great pals, huh? He must be rooting for Bush, right!

I'm sure the Holy Father sent Obama and family a nice note. Probably explaining the entire theology of the unborn in terms of baby Jesus and of oppressed peoples suffering genocide by "The Man", except in a much more stylish and persuasive vein.
Whether it does any good is another question, but our little pope is very good at making people take their medicine by making them realize it's the obvious, desirable thing to do. I do not have this power, alas!

Biden can get the Pontius Pilate award. He is personally opposed to the murder of the innocent but enables others to become murders.
I hope Biden doesn't give Pilate a bad name. At least Pilate was a pagan.
