look, give Cavuto a break. He's juggling being on national TV, he's got producers shouting stuff in his ear, and the guy sitting next to him is wearing the Roman collar, and all his life he's called guys wearing the collar "Father." It's sloppy, but I can see his position.
Yeah, small point, but I do wish he and guys like Hannity would do a better job of promoting the Catholic Faith, esp when they profess to be Catholic. I think if they are going to say things publicly about the Faith they should be held to the same standard as the politicians. After all, they are public speakers.
But then again, they aren't royally botching Catholic teaching like the "ardent practicing Catholic..,who has studied this issue for a long time"
Doesn't this problem stem from the fact that we have:
Practicing Catholics
Orthodox Catholics
Catholics in Name Only
Lapsed Catholics
Fallen Away Catholics
Easter and Christmas Catholics
Former Catholics
Reverted Catholics
Converted Catholics
Cradle Catholics
It's like a smorgasboard; which description do you want to call yourself.
And now there is the Ardent Catholic.
Could we not just teach that the title is CATHOLIC and to be a card carrying member you must follow the precepts of the Church.
Now see that wasn't so hard.
Wow -- His Excellency did a great job of not getting tangled up in the bias of the questions!! He never fell into the trap of committing himself to what Neil was proposing, but chose other aspects of Neil's questions and used those to reply with Church teaching that needs to be better understood. And did so on a dime! Spontaneous recognition of what not to respond to and the ability to respond by teaching things oft misunderstood in a 5-minute interview...hwow!
Way to go, Archbishop Chaput!!!!!
Margo- Maybe I'm too dense but I didn't think Mr. Cavuto was trying to "trap" his Excellency into answering any particular way. Besides Abp. Chaput, as you stated, astutely gave clear, concise answers re. Caholic teaching. God bless him and all bishops and clergy!
I see Cavuto's calling the Archbishop "Father" as balancing NBC's Chris Matthews' 2005 coverage of JPII's funeral and BXIV's election where Matthews called all his interviewees with a pectoral cross "Your Eminence."
