Gravatar Look at it this way . . . if the school wanted to hand out copies of the Ten Commandments, that would be illegal, even with parental permission.

But there seems to be no limit on the desire of these secularists to sexualize young children . . .

We are in a seriously ill society.

Gravatar As a physician, I have never been comfortable with the degree of autonomy we give children in the area of sexually related medicine. We would never allow an eleven-year-old diabetic to manage insulin without parental supervision. Why do we think an eleven-year-old girls is qualified to manage powerful reproductive hormones on her own. This is just one more way our culture is eroding the role of parents. I cannot tell you how many times I have had parents bring in their daughter for abdominal pain and I find out their daughter has an STD or is pregnant. Suddenly my hands are tied and I have to get the child's permission to discuss her condition with her parents because we are now dealing with reproductive issues. I agree that the Bishop should address the intrinsic evil of contraception. I think appealing to the intrinsic harm this policy does to the family may be more persuasive to a non-Catholic audience.

Gravatar The comments are right on the mark. I didn't find "Diogenes'" comments particularly helpful, though. Rather, his commentary is another example of the tendency in some quarters to see in whatever happens an opportunity to criticize "the bishops." In this case, Bishop Malone is not the problem, and in fact his public comments, at least the ones I've seen, have been on the mark. Let's stay focused on what we can do with God's grace to make things better, rather than bemoan the perceived failures of others.

Gravatar I went to the King Middle School site to find more about the possible dispensing of birth control pills to middle schoolers, and while there, I found a link to Real Life Real Talk which is Planned Parenthood owned. Not on the first page but ones that leads to Real Life Real Talk link.
I started at portlandmaineschool page
http://king.portlandschools.org/....org/ index.html
(on the left side of page) clicked on Community Connection once there, then I clicked on the Portland Education Partnership (in the middle of the page)
http://www.portlandeducation.org/
Once you are at Portland Education Partnership page, (on the right side of the page) it says "Visit the Real Life Real Talk website - encouraging open, honest and balanced talk about sex and relationships among parents and teens.",click on the Real Life Real Talk.
This is a A Planned Parenthood owned site: 2007 Planned Parenthood® Federation of America, Inc.

I found this PROCLAMATION signed by the Mayor of Portland, ME on Real Life Real Talk site:
Proclamation Real Life. Real Talk.® Month March, 2007
http://www.realliferealtalk.org/ ...roclamation.pdf
Excerpt:
"Whereas: Our city—Portland, Maine—was chosen as one of only three national test sites for this groundbreaking work, based on our high social capital, support for sexuality education in the schools, and our progressive spirit
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT I, Nicholas Mavadones, Jr., Mayor of the City of Portland, Maine and the members of the Portland City Council do hereby proclaim March, 2007 as Real Life. Real Talk.® Month within the City of Portland and support and encourage all our citizens to engage in open, honest, and balanced community and family dialogue about sexual health and relationships to create positive change for our culture."

What I am wondering is what type of sex education is taught at that school and who has been providing it? How involved is Planned Parenthood in what is going on? What about the fact that condoms have been given out since 2000?
