Gravatar Back to the gripe I've been having with my family and friends. Where is the McCain camp with stuff like this??? There are so many issues from abortion to the financial industry meltdown that McCain could be using to his advantage! Why the snail's pace in trumpeting this information? Are they waiting for the final week before the election to open this box of chocolates?

Gravatar That figures... of course he will be wanting to ensure abortion coverage is guaranteed to all in a health plan. The very fact you didn't receive a reply implies that. This is the man who is going to try to reduce the number of abortions; who doesn't know when life begins and is going to sign FOCA if he gets into power. Wouldn't his thinking go like this... "No one should be punished with having to deliver a baby.... it is every womans' right to have an abortion." He thinks it would be cheaper to cover the cost of an abortion than have to provide health care for the child who is allowed to live. Demonic.

Gravatar One of my big concerns with the very concept of government-run health care is not just covering abortions, but requiring them.

Picture, if you will, a 46 year old pregnant woman covered under a government plan, where government funds are allowed to pay for abortions. It's not hard to see a time when the government plan would require an amniocentesis to check for chromosomal abnormalities (e.g., Down Syndrome), and if the test comes back positive, would deny prenatal care, saying that the plan would only pay for an abortion. After all, it would cost the government health care program less than 15 prenatal checkups, not to mention delivery costs and the neonatal care required.

Then it would be a short step to removing the genetic issues the child may have, and from there simple population control (i.e., "You've already had two babies, you must abort the rest. That's all the plan will cover.")

Gravatar Obama doesn't need his government plan to pay for abortions. The Freedom of Choice Act that he plans to sign would mandate federal funding for all abortions.

Gravatar Ron Paul or Brownback would have been our best bets re: pro-life.

Gravatar Back to the gripe I've been having with my family and friends. Where is the McCain camp with stuff like this???

Several have suggested that McCain has gone into Bob Dole sleepwalk mode and that this is a disaster because it means Obama gets to fake being a centrist without serious challenge.

Gravatar Re BO's silence on this, well, one doesn't REALLY expect folks who support baby-killing to be forthright about it, does one?

Gravatar Matt,

You are correct, sir. You can carry the logic even further and see that it gets much worse than that.

Imagine all of the Catholic hospitals that will be forced to close as well.

Gravatar Matthew A. Siekierski and Joseph-

Right on. And it does get worse. The ethic in such a system of limited resources would be "The greatest good for the greatest number," which is the mantra of utilitarianism. It sounds all nice at first until one realizes its consequences for the handicapped,as you noted.

But it's not just limited to abortion. It'll hit on the other end of life as well. Why should taxpayer dollars be spent to keep an aging cancer patient alive instead of helping a whole lot of other people who could live longer? Sacrificing one person to help others makes rational sense, but it is inhuman. (One reason I don't believe all the answers lie in rationality alone.)

The same approach an insurance company takes when 'totalling' a car is going to be taken when evaluating human life.

Very ominous approach indeed.
