Gravatar I am flabbergasted. How can a woman who works as a "champion of mercy" call into doubt the fountainhead of Mercy itself? Can a worker for "Christan social justice", let alone a nun, materialize the Gospel to the point that it ceases to serve any kind of real support for her arguments? Can a preacher of mercy for the most heinous criminals simultaneously not preach Christ, and Him crucified? What stupidity. What evil!

Gravatar Not a certified theologian here, but it's interesting to contrast Sr. Helen Prejean's comment with John 10:11-30. In fact, her comment almost seems like a gloss of John 10:20.

Gravatar That's the crux (pun intended) of feminist theology. God is feminine and violence is masculine, therefore God wouldn't do that. The crucifixion happened because of the violent patriarchy. Jesus was a powerless victim, and became "one of us" victims of intrinsically unjust patriarchy. It's pure Rosemary Reuther. It's heresy.

But she's an example of the "good" politically active Catholic. The Dems wish we were all like her.

Gravatar Who are the Republicans having? A Jesuit Priest?

Gravatar Man O Man, the trolls are coming out from under the rocks this week. Nothing like clustering them all together in the same town. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. The bishops must be having a field day, this so magnifies what a lousy lack of teaching has been the rigor du jour in the past few decades.

Gravatar "A bit too left of left" What does not believing in the crucifixation have to do with being left wing? I mean lets face it the majority of people in the world, wether there political beliefs are to the left or right, do not believe in Jesus Christ.

Gravatar "A bit too left of left" What does not believing in the crucifixation have to do with being left wing?

Quite a bit actually. Being left-wing Catholic may only mean an emphasis on environmentalism or open-door immigration, but when you go to the left of that you find actual denial of Church teachings, Christ's miracles are merely allegories, etc.

This also happens in the other direction. A right-winger will have a preference for the Latin mass, and emphasize Church authority, but you go to the right of that you get stuff like the Church went off the rails in the 60's so the current Pope is not the real pope, etc.

Gravatar ... what Scott said (well).

Remember: "left" does not necessarily mean "democrat" just like "right" does not necessarily mean "republican."

Gravatar lol WHAT!?

Gravatar Does anyone know what Prejean said about abortion? I can't find it anywhere. Mark Shea has a good analysis of her talk on his blog - I just read it...

Gravatar If it's bad to execute criminals - because they're human beings, why is it hunky dory for women to execute their offspring? In the Bizzaro world these people inhabit, the absolutely innocent and defenseless are "unjust aggressors" not to be tolerated while the absolutely guilty and dangerous are to be given liberty. This is the Democratic Party: Crucify the lamb of God and let Barrabbas go free.

Gravatar Just another left-wing loon - a perfect Democrat! Tom

Gravatar What an idiot. Wish I could say I was surprised.

Gravatar Anon,

Stop Jesuit-bashing.

There are many, many, many good Jesuit priests. I detest seeing people steamroll the entire order.

Gravatar Ironically, speaking of the Jesuits... they invited Prejean to their commencement at St. Joe's University a few years ago. If I remember correctly, they even gave her an honorary doctorate.

Hmmm...

Gravatar Ha! How can you even take her seriously? Theological speculation for the "open-minded". How can you even be called Catholic if you don't believe in the crucifixion or, presumably, the resurrection? That's kind of foundational dogma there.

I guess this is the logical conclusion. If you can deny abortion because it was debated once upon a time, you can deny anything. Everything's been debated at one point and time, including the divinity of Christ. So much for the Magisterium. Who need it when you can "think for yourself"?

Gravatar And Amen, Steph! God bless the Jesuits!

There are many good ones out there, and we need them. Many of them are doing great good for the Church. Of course, there are some well noted exceptions, but there's no need to bash an entire religious order.

If you have a tendency to think ill of Jesuits, you should read really read this.

Gravatar "Is this a Catholic?"
"Or is this a heretic?"

The crucifixion under Pontius Pilate for us men and our salvation is de fide definita. We confess it every Sunday. To deny it is heresy.

Gravatar Playing Devil's Advocate:

You know, the good sister's getting up there in years. Perhaps she's just not well.

Gravatar When nuns go bad they really, really go nuts.

Gravatar Sister Prejean's comments should have come as no surpise.

" . . .makes you realize the Dead Man Walking truly belongs on the shelf in the library in the Fiction category."

"Being devout Catholics, 'the norm' would be to look to the church for support and healing. Again, this need for spiritual stability was stolen by Sister Prejean."

The book alleges whole cloth fabrications by Sister Prejean within her book "Dead Man Walking".

"On November 5, 1977, the Bourque's teenage daughter, Loretta, was found murdered in a trash pile near the city of New Iberia, Louisiana lying side by side near her boyfriend–with three well-placed bullet holes behind each head. "

III. Death Of Truth: Sister Prejean's new book Death Of Innocents

For some years, there has existed a consistent pattern, from death penalty opponents, to declare certain death row inmates to be actually innocent. Those claims have, consistently, been 70-83% in error. ("ALL INNOCENCE ISSUES -- THE DEATH PENALTY")

Keep that in mind with "Death of Innocents".

Readers should be very careful, as they have no way of knowing if any of the fact issues in either of the two cases, as presented by Sister Prejean, are true. Readers would have to conduct their own thorough, independent examination to make that determination. You can start here.

There is a three-probe DNA match indicating that the bloodstains on O'Dell's clothing is indeed consistent with the victim Helen Schartner's DNA as well as her blood type and enzyme factors." "There is certainly no truth to O'Dell's accusation that evidence was suppressed or witnesses intimidated by the prosecution."
