Really, Thomas .. I hope that when you're their age, a very long time from now, you can sit up straight after long hours of sitting and trying to listen attentively to what's being said.

Wuerl holds himself rather well. And I'm not seriously criticizing, as I hope my caption made clear, it's just a kinda lousy picture, imo.

And frankly, if we want to be practical about it: get them better chairs or lower the table a bit. I also don't understand the candle stands in the background, and the icon of Jesus is rather limpid. I think the event organizer could do a bit better.

Being a mid-life convert, I haven't seen that many bishops, but FWIW all the bishops I've ever seen have posture ranging from bad (Gomez, Niederauer, Kucera, Wilkinson, Mahony) to terrible (Chaput).

Posture is overrated unless you're on a job interview. I tend to believe that people who keep their backs straight at all times probably do so because they have a stick permanently lodged up their...such people that I've come across are uptight and have no idea how to relax and not take themselves too seriously.
Gregg, your observations intrigue me. I've never really noticed Chaput having poor posture. I'll take note next time I see him. Not that it matters. He could be a hunchback and I would still be honored to call him a good friend! :)

I mean no disrespect to Abp. Chaput by observing that his posture resembles a crozier. In all other areas of which I have any knowledge of him, he's exemplary.

I know you weren't, Gregg. I was just being overly defensive. :) It's all good--except maybe Archbishop Chaput's posture!

That's the "in order to be heard you have to practically swallow the microphone" slouch posture found at any conference these days. Microphones were clearly designed for Hobbits, not people. ;-)

The only reason posture is important here is so to avoid the scandal of our bishops looking too much like senators. :)
