Gravatar Very thorough, helpful & non-vindictive article. Doing the "bloggers" a real service. Thanks!

Gravatar "It's meaningless drivel with no answers, and instead mostly opining and empty wordcraft."

This is a wonderful post. The real problem is that President Schlegel thinks these authors represent "perspectives and forms of knowledge" students (Catholic or not) ought to know and be well-versed in. The fact that it's "meaningless drivel" is a more compelling reason to cancel a lecture than a lack of orthodoxy.

If a Catholic university were genuinely concerned with "free-thinking" they would invite actual thinkers to speak rather than sham authors.

Gravatar The problems at Creighton are apparent within 5 seconds of logging into the university site. Check out the first picture of flash intro-it's the man of the hour, John P. Schlegel, S.J. in all his vainglorious splendor presiding over what look like Arby's breadbaskets with "warming" napkins, some sort of cognac glasses and tie-dyed hippie banners. If he can't see the problem with this liturgical nightmare he's probably not going to "get" why Anne Lamott shouldn't speak a keynote there. I can't even imaging the grovelling apology he gave her when he broke the news that she was cancelled.

Gravatar Unfortunately (and this pains this CU alum greatly), they don't know when to leave well enough alone. After the event was cancelled, a consortium of liberal Protestant churches in town invitied Lamott to still come to town and speak at another venue on the same night/time as the previous lecture. The last two weeks in the bulletin at St. John's (the University parish), they've been running inserts promoting that event. You can't call that "academic freedom."

Gravatar unfortunately, there are way too many midwives who support abortion. At a recent ACNM convention, the Christian CNM group was booed down when some of us spoke up at the open forum session objecting to a workshop on how to do vacuum D&C (an abortion technique that is also used to clean up after a spontaneous miscarriage). The intent of the workshop presenters was clearly to entice CNMs into the lucrative abortion industry, which has always had trouble finding qualified providers.

And a little known factoid is that there is a very high percentage of lesbian midwives. Most of them are very quiet about their proclivities, but it is definitely there. Most are NOT abusive of patients, any more than the average heterosexual male who deals with OB and GYN would be abusive. Still, it is a political thing that makes life, shall we say, interesting for those of us who are Christian, pro-family, and pro-life.

Gravatar good catch on the mainpage picture. sheesh.

Gravatar Thanks for the info- woow...

Good to know.

Gravatar "And a little known factoid is that there is a very high percentage of lesbian midwives. "

That is not surprising in the least. Note the affinity that certain lesbian socail movements and festivals have for the ideals of mother earth, mothering, the creation of children, fertility. As the laws of nature go, they are still rightly enamored and amazed by fertility and motherhood... Having men involved seems to be the part that is most annoying...
