I guess they have to endorse somebody they think has a shot. But so far, Thompson's campaign has been an updated version of "Weekend At Bernie's," with aides carrying a corpse from event to event (then again, has he even had more than one event in day?).
If NRTL were concerned with the principal of thing, what about Huckabee or my man Ron Paul?

Whether or not he has a shot, they should have endorsed Ron Paul.

The Republican candidates are all terrible. I am a registered Republican but I won't vote for any of them. If this is what our choices are, I'll be leaving a blank in the presidential part of the ballot next year.

Good Lord, first Ron Paul doesn't think Islamist terror is a threat and Thompson doesn't have to give speeches like Obama, that sound good with no substance. Fred has his record to run on. My only gripe is that he didn't vote to impeach Clinton.

I actually think it's a wise move. They recognize that Romney and Rudy are already stuck in their positions, and they can't buy any favoritism from those candidates.
However, Fred is clearly pro-life... but it's not his main issue. Give this to Fred and they run a real chance of launching him into a possible nomination, or at least a vice-presidential nomination.
Then, if the Republicans take the White House, a real debt will be owed to NRLC. A debt that couldn't be created with any other candidate.
Further, Fred seems more inclined to go after Rudy than Romney. If Fred can draw support from Rudy, it advances the chances of Romney. This is an important consideration, since Rudy seems like the worst possible candidate from a pro-life perspective.
All in all, good move. What else could they do? Ron Paul is a joke, and any person that considers supporting the nut should have voting rights revoked.
