Gravatar It should be the Regina Ceoli. It fits all those qualifications. It is especially appropriate because it is Easter and it sings of the hope of the Risen Christ.

Gravatar Regina Coeli has my vote too.

Gravatar I agree - Regina Ceoli ... since, too, this will be at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception ... along with it appropriateness at this time of Easter.

Gravatar "Four more years! Four more years!"

What? Not that kind of chant?

Gravatar "Regina Caeli" is an excellent choice. Other options could be "Jubilate Deo" or "Christus Vincit."

Gravatar Hmm, by "chant" I meant more "cheer".

Please see my amended post. Sorry about the confusion - these are great suggestions!

Gravatar how about B16 we love you, carry on the tradition of the JP2 we love chants!

Gravatar When dealing with solid Catholics, using the word 'chant' automatically means Gregorian ;).

In terms of a 'cheer', I would suggest "We Love the Pope who brings Christ our Hope!"

-Harrison

Gravatar When you go to Rome and people cheer him at the Audiences and such it's this.

Beeehn-e-DETTO-o! (clap - clap - clapclapclap) - Beeehn-e-DETTO!

Repeat as necessary.

Gravatar Yes, but an Italian soccer chant doesn't seem that good for an American greeting?

Gravatar Reading all this I couldn't help but think of something from the musical "Bye Bye Birdie". It's an easy tune with simple lyrics. So, I made the appropriate changes:

We love you Pope Benedict (or Papa Benedetto)
Oh yes we do
We love you Pope Benedict (Papa Benedetto)
And will be true!
When you're not near us
We're blue!
Oh, Pope Benedict (Papa Benedetto), we love you...

Gravatar "Where there is Peter, there is the Church!"

"On this rock, on this rock!"

"Keys to the Kingdom! Keys to the Kingdom!"

Gravatar Be-ne-dic-tus he's our guy!
Be-ne-dic-tus X-V-I!

Gravatar Palestrina's motet Tu es Petrus

Gravatar Tu Es Petrus
its a very short simple chant that the laity could learn in minutes. it was the same one Cardinal Kung used to communicate his fidelity to Rome while in prison in China

Gravatar Bu-bu-bu-Ben-nie the six-TEENTH!

Gravatar Tu Es Petrus

That's how JPII was greeted, if my memory is correct, when he visited the Basilica.

It's also very Catholic, biblically based and easy.

Gravatar We are your people, you are our Pope!
You come to bring us Christ our Hope!

Gravatar Actually, that "Italian soccer chant" was composed, very quickly, by the North American seminary guys on site after the Pope's name was first announced. They used the Italian version of the name because they were in Rome doing as the Romans do. But let's face it -- the clap pattern thing is pure Americano!

Gravatar I propose a compromise:

Ben-e-dett-o! (clap - clap - clapclapclap)

and

Tu es Petrus! (clap - clap - clapclapclap)

in alternation.

Gravatar "I propose a compromise:

Ben-e-dett-o! (clap - clap - clapclapclap)

and

Tu es Petrus! (clap - clap - clapclapclap)

in alternation."

This.

Gravatar I like Tim's. I'll pass all of these on to the relevant personages.

Gravatar I like the "Italian soccer chant"-it's short and sweet!

Had a feeling that American seminarians in Rome invented it!

All the others are good, too...wish I had imagination!

Thomas, let us know what the Dominicans choose!
