Yes, he's very supportive of the TLM. After he saw the blow-out attendence at a TLM in his diocese he said, "If this is what it takes, so be it." I couldn't imagine His Holiness putting a liturgical progressive in St. Louis. Tom

Tom, one more thing. Bishop Matano has actually celebrated the TLM himself! I can see Archbishop Burke's fingerprints all over this appointment! Deo Gratias
ps: can't wait to see the replacements for LA, Detroit, etc

Bp. Matano has a JCD, so what more need we know? But, Bp. Cordileone (who ALSO has a JCD) will be a gem wherever he goes.

Bp. Matano was the principal homilist at the Rhode Island St. Thomas More Society's Red Mass shortly after he became Bishop of Burlington (2005, if I recall).
He was an excellent speaker, and is very highly thought of in the Diocese of Providence.

This cat must be on the fast track. The archbishops of St. Loo are like anchorpeople who move up from a market of this size to say NY or Chicago. Consider- Burke- extremely long complicated title at the Vatican. Rigali- Philly in 2003, followed by a red hat. Not his last ecclesial stop. Just as TJM notes- no dissenters here.

Mons Matano is a very interesting man. Most kind and cordial, a sharp mind, and very dedicated to tradition. May God strengthen and direct him in his present and in any future duties.

Pray for the man (God knows his name) who will be the next Archbishop of Saint Louis. This archdiocese put dear Archbishop Burke through a lot.
P.S. to Anonymous: Doctor of Sacred Theology (S.T.D. Sacrae Theologiae Doctor)
Don't know about the other.

Well perhaps whoever gets in won't be busy excommunicating Catholic faithful in the Diocese. The joke around the hospital where I work is that "if Archbishop Burke had stayed in St Louis there wouldn't be anyone left in the Archdiocese!"

Yes David, well, I'm sure there was such sniveling trash talk. There always is.

David,
Only those nominal Catholics who place themselves outside the Church through dissent, etc. excommunicate themselves. It certainly is no joke. How lucky your area was that Arbp. Burke would not allow such dissenters to infect his beloved archdiocese.
How lucky we all would be if there were more American bishops like Burke!

Bishop Matano has been dealing with a horrible string of questionable (i.e. - VERY old) sex abuse lawsuits in Burlington in which the diocese has been ordered to pay far beyond its means. He has shown a lot of courage in this. If he is sent to St. Louis, pray for his successor in Burlington - he's got his work cut out for him.
