So well Benedict might go easy on the prayers. To pray for the conversion of the Jews would be a kingdom divided against itself.

Tell me, Thom, does he have the ability to change this without any council vote? (I ask because I honestly don't know). It seems a little strange to me that he would go forth and make the Latin rite available to all who want it and then go and want to change one of the prayers, a prayer that is highly controversial. I'm honestly a little shocked at this.

Pope John XXIII changed the prayer to create the 1962 missal. Why can't Pope Benedict XVI change the prayer, too?
The point is, "I will be all things to all men, so I might by all means save some." Our Pope feels that Mother Church would be okay with changing the prayer for the conversion of Jews in order to convert more Jews. And ya know, I agree with him.
There's nothing wrong with the prayer as it stands, in itself. But if it's getting in the way of its own job, the Holy Father should tinker with it until the engine starts to turn over again.

It is certainly within the Pope's authority to change the prayer but doing so at this moment in time might not be prudent. All of the good will he has accumulated because of Summorum Pontificum could vanish in an instant.
Part of me feels that so what, if the Pope wants to drop the prayer then fine. We can still pray for the Jews but another part of me is pissed that we're allowing anybody from the outside to tell us how to worship. If I went to a a synogauge and started banging on about their order of worship they'd tell me to shut the heck up and get out and rightly so.
