Gravatar I don't know where else to spread this news, but Cardinal Egan of N.Y. has invited Sen Obama to the Al Smith dinner to be celebrated in October.

Al Smith was a Catholic politician from New York and this dinner was started in his name by Cardinal Spellmen.

If you all realize Obama's views and opinion, you will realize that this invitation is a travesty.

Please protest this scandalous event!

Contact Cardinal Egan's office at:

1011 First Ave

New York, NY 10022

Phone: 212-371-1000

Fax: 212-308-2674

Thanks for allowing me to post this message.

Gravatar Well, Delle, don't we need to know a BIT more about it to judge what's going on?

ps: Every election day, I wear my real "Al Smith for President" button. I like to honor the only time a Catholic ran for president.

Gravatar I believe both Sen. McCain and Sen Obama were invited to the dinner

Gravatar Ed,
I am not the judge of anything; I am merely forwarding the facts.
I called the number and was assured by the lady on the phone, that Sen. Obama was indeed invited to the Al Smith dinner.
She then forwarded me to a line where I could register my complaint - which I did.

Joannes,
Sen. McCain was also invited, but I don't understand the relevance.

Delle

Gravatar Sen. McCain was also invited, but I don't understand the relevance.

It's relevant because both are running for President. If only McCain were invited it would be seen as the Church endorsing one candidate over the another.

Gravatar Since 1960, candidates (either presidential or vice-presidential) from both parties have been showing up to the dinner, including pro-choice men like Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Al Gore twice. Politics are supposed to be put aside for the evening to raise money for Catholic Charities, and I believe this dinner is quite effective in accomplishing that. Given the cardinal's recent call-outs of Mayor Giuliani, Speaker Pelosi, and Senator Biden, I think he has a fair handle on how to proceed with this dinner.

Gravatar Joannes,
Yes, the organizers of the Al Smith dinner usually invite both candidates.
In this case, however, inviting Obama to sit a a Catholic table is indeed scandalous.
McCain has a perfect pro-life record.
Obama believes in infanticide and he should not be invited to the Al Smith dinner.
His invitation is an insult to Al Smith, to Cardinal Spellman and to all catholics.

Gravatar A bit of history on The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.
Short version: "Sponsored by the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation, these annual fêtes were initiated by then-Archbishop (later Cardinal) Francis J. Spellman of the Archdiocese of New York in 1945. . . . Many of past dinners have generated front-page news items as a result of the program, i.e. joint appearances of opposing presidential nominees. . . . While commendatory references to Smith and his actions were once common, by chance or by design, many of the addresses at later dinners have taken on a lighter tone. Indeed, the occasion has evolved into something of an opportunity for speakers - particularly ones whose mien is typically quite serious - to show, through quips and slightly irreverent humor, that they can poke fun at a political issue, an opponent, or themselves."

Gravatar Maybe the Obammessiah will hear something life-changingly pro-life and change his stand on abortion.

"With God, all things are possible."

Hey! It could happen! 8-)

Gravatar I read the articles. Thanks for posting them, Thomas.
