Gravatar When leftists issue hate-mongering rants the right is expected to accept the claim of "satire!" without exception... and anyone who points out that the rant was non-satirical is just anti-free-speech.

But when the left is offended by something that clearly is satire... well, it seems to be a very different story. I wonder why they are so anti-free speech?

Gravatar "I was concerned about a couple of steps that the Russian government took in the last several days. One was reducing the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia."

--John McCain

Gravatar Help me out, what's your point Katherine?

Gravatar Re NY leaving abortion out of the satire: could be cuz one cannot caricature Obama's abortionism...it's already as extreme as it can get. Unless there is way to be more than 100% in favor of abortion.

Gravatar I guess there is - it's not voting for the Infant Born Alive Protection Act.

Again, I wouldn't have thought so, but there we have it.

Gravatar well, technically, that's infanticide, but i see your point: they still end up dead...

Gravatar This satire might be a little too close to the truth... I hope the American voters wake up and return to their senses!

Gravatar Excuse me but, FDR was accused and satirized as a sell-out to the Communists because of his New Deal. Instead of saying that the attacks were offensive, he took it like a man. [Like we all have to at times; regardless of which sex we happen to be!] As a matter of fact, FDR took on his accusers, and put out the fire. And then he went on with the business of running the country. Even though BO is just a candidate he can show the same toughness as FDR.

It seems to me that for at least a generation, too many politicians have gotten more and more whiney. Too much "feel good" and not enough "do good," so they have no "cuticle" to resist tough barbs. BO is running for the most powerful office in the world, for goodness sakes. He needs to toughen up not just for his fellow citizens, but in front of the whole world if he is elected president. Or what's he gonna do when a head of state insults him or us? Perhaps lodge a formal complaint in the UN!!!!??????

Hey, no one rushes for the smelling salts when Bush is not only called Hitler, he's portrayed as such in posters whenever anti-American protests are held anywhere in the world. Up to this point, Hitler had more people put to death than OBL, so where's the real insult?

Regardless, when someone insults or interrupts Bush in public, he extols the value of free speech!

Oy!!!

Gravatar It is sad that some people find the idea of a Muslim as the president more fearful than the idea of a pro-abort follower of Moloch becoming president. BO is scary, but not because he once wore Islamic clothing: He's scary because he has voted down protective pro-life measures that even pro-aborts were okay with.

Gravatar I agree with MVH's point about responding to criticism. And the whole country has become prickly and whiny. Seeking offense seems like the national pasttime. And one of the most irritating things about the left is that it applies different standards to itself than it does to its opposition.

But I have to point out that the New Deal WAS socialist. And FDR WAS soft on communism. He is the one who christened Stalin "Uncle Joe." FDR bears significant responsiblity for 50 years of communist domination of half of Europe and all that came with it. What might have looked like satire at the time turned out to be prophecy.

Gravatar As I see it, the most interesting thing about this whole episode is the amateur (and immature?) way that the Obama campaign reacted to it.

By announcing that the cover was "offensive" the Obama campaign turned this cover into a multi-day major story on all the "talking head" cable channels. So all the false rumors that the cover mocked were repeated over and over again.

Question: How did that response advance the campaign's message during a week when polls show the race growing tighter?

Answer: It didn't.

Very poor message management.

Can anyone imagine the 1980 Reagan campaign or the 1992 Clinton campaign bungling something in this fashion?

This very inexperienced Dem. nominee may well manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory . . . let's hope!

Gravatar The New Yorker is being attacked for nothing less than blaspheming the left's anointed one. It's funny/sad how they respond to insinuations that Obama is Moslem by acting like, well, Moslems reacting to statements insufficiently adoring of their prophet. I fully expect the lefties to start putting (PBUH) after Obama's name any day now.

Gravatar To make up for this, the New Yorker must offer a pinch of incense at the Messiah's altar.

Gravatar Katherine, are you still looking for the point of your post to share with us? By the way, Obama's a left-wing loon. Never crossed the aisle on ANY issue, unlike McCain.Only the media's worship of their new idol can get this inexperienced clown, who routinely voted present rather than cast an actual vote, elected.
