I'm almost as worried about the 99.9% human label.
Who is going to decide human/not human? Where will the line be drawn?
I think there's a parody in here somewhere, maybe a play on both God and man/both man and animal, but I'm too disturbed by this news to think of it right now.
The DNA that will be animal will be the DNA in the mitochondria. Mitochnodria (energy producing organelles in the cell) have their own DNA, and there are mitochondria in ovum because it manufactures the energy the cell needs. Every persons mitochondrial DNA comes from their mother. All of the DNA that directs the development of the organism will be human--so their is no chance of it having cow-like characteristics. All mitochondria functions in the same way. Although you really never know what will happen, because we understand so little.
the 99.9% human should not unsettle anyone with Divine Faith. You are either Human or you are not. A spiritual human soul is necessary for these scientific concoctions to be human. These will NEVER be human. They are as human as a valve from a pig.
The aforesaid in no way implies a lack of sinfulness of which competent moral theologians can preach. It is not murder but it might be something worse.
