Gravatar McCain backed by anti-Catholic bigot and this is the only mention of it on this blog? Here we have a presidential nominee sidling up to a man who things the Church is the Whore of Babylon and we are responsible for the Holocaust, the Catholic League comparing Pastor Hagee to Louis Farrakhan, and not a single mention of it here? I have to say, I'm disappointed. You'd think the papists would be up in arms--why such meekness?

Gravatar Okay, I anticipated the inevitable: McCain is only a candidate, not the nominee.

Gravatar ... and he apologized.

Gravatar No apology was issued. McCain simply stated that he doesn't agree with everything Hagee believes, in spite of saying that he valued Hagee's "spiritual leadership." I think what we want to see is McCain denouncing Hagee's anti-Catholic views. Anything short is, in Bill Donohue's words "disappointing."

Gravatar You'd think the papists would be up in arms--why such meekness?

Probably because we already played this game with Ron Paul and some of the fringe elements that support him.

Gravatar Yeah I agree with Scott, I think its fruitless to play this game ad nauseum. You can't choose who decides to support you, and you can't be expected to clarify with a fine-tooth comb exactly what you respect in the person supporting you.

From what I've read, McCain quickly made it clear that he disagrees with this person's anti-Catholicism.

I guess I don't see much of story here, just mostly hypersensitivity. If I've missed something, email me the evidence. Thanks.

Gravatar 1. Hagee is not a "fringe element," as much as we'd like to believe so. His Christian Zionism movement is quite influential, both in terms of American religion and international politics. His anti-Catholic bigotry has been described by the Catholic League as far more dangerous than Bob Jones.

2. McCain sought Hagee's endorsement and appeared with him when Hagee announced it. This is not the same as Farrakhan's endorsement of Obama--which was not sought but was denounced.

3. McCain has failed to distance himself from Hagee adequately, because he has only stated that he doesn't believe in everything Hagee believes. He never mentions or condemns Hagee's anti-Catholic sentiments. Rather, he calls for Catholics to get on the bandwagon, in spite of the offensive characters he has invited along. Evidently he thinks that our votes are in his pocket. If this is not "much of a story" I guess he is right.

Gravatar meh.

Gravatar I agree P, at least with you that Catholics are notoriously easy to win over and hard to lose. If I see them develop a more sensitive skin, however, I'd like to see it be about more substantive issues. But I'll watch the story more closely in future - fair?

Gravatar Sure thing!
