Gravatar Maybe because Pelosi and Biden opened their big fat mouths on national television with some very stupid comments! Strange, I thought Democrats were supposed to be, by MSM definition, brilliant! Tom

Gravatar Maybe because these bishops realize that an Obama presidency would bring about legalized infanticide, euthanasia, partial birth abortion, and other culture of death outrages.

Obama promised that as President, the first thing he would do is sign the "Freedom of Choice" act, which would effectively bring back those of the above. No other presidential candidate has been this radically pro death as Obama is.

With the exception of the death penalty, of course.

Must protect convicted murderers, but to he** with unborn babies and the handicapped.

Sick.

Gravatar 1. The Pope. His public chewout of them during the U.S. visit clarified thought. They may want promotions, after all.
2. Sen. Obama. Never met an infanticide he didn't like.
3. Speaker Pelosi. Her sudden attack of oral diharrea on abortion made them stand up and take notice.
4. Senator Biden. Gosh- no other pro-abort Dem politicians have cited other theologians in a tortured way. Silence is golden. Particularly in a presidential year.
5. Catholics for Obama. When some of us read those words, our stomachs churn. The death rattle for respectability in public dissent on Church issues. After this go-round, too risky.
6. The gradual transition from those prelates who nuanced their way out of these jams- think Cardinal McCarrick in '04, the diminished presence of Cardinal Mahony- to shepherds acting like shepherds: Martino, Rigali, Wuerl, Vasa, etc.
7. Archbishops Chaput and Burke. Who don't know the meaning of the word 'nuance.' Their consistent examples put steel in their peers' vertebrae.
8. The blogs. This here website. CAEI. WDTPRS. Cacciaguida. Charlotte Was Both. Dyspeptic Mutterings. Too many others to mention. And their correspondents. They sped the exit of Nick Cafardi from the Steubenville board. They make noise. They cry aloud and spare not. Looks kinda prophetic in mission and tone. Diocesan papers, Commonweal. NCR- be afraid. Be very afraid.
9. The kids at Steubenville, John Paul The Great U, other ultraorthodox Catholic colleges. Attention student bodies at ND, G'Town, Catholic U. BC, Nova, etc.- to quote the song title by one-hit wonder Lamont Jordan, "This is how we do it." You should, too.
10. Approximately 48.5 million of the best reasons. Far, far, far too many innocents sacrificed in abortuaries for far too long. Not cool anymore. In about three years, after the last baby-boomer woman passes her ability to bear children, we will hear it. Rachel bewailing her children. Time to prepare for that ghastly day.

Gravatar I have a question: can someone explain to me why Catholics cannot vote for a pro-choice candidate? It's not because of the Bishop's guide, correct? It's a matter of the fundamental teachings of the Church as put forth in the Catechism?

Also, what is the Scriptural evidence that abortion is a more grave issue than others?

Thank you!

Gravatar I currently attend one of the mainstream "Catholic" institutions. And while there are some good elements here, the other colleges you mention put us to shame.

Abortion has been proscribed from the beginning of Christianity. Go look at the Didache if you need some evidence.

And abortion outweighs the other issues because without life what do things like health care and other social justice issues matter? The upholding of life is the prime right, and when that is not affirmed whatever system of human rights you try to develop will fail. Miserably.

Gravatar Excellent, Gerard E, especially #7.

Gravatar In all fairness, Anon 3:35pm asked for scriptural references. I so WISH the Holy Spirit placed the Didache in with Sacred Scripture, but alas "Not as I will, but as You will."

The Scriptures certainly imply it in God valuing life before birth ("I formed you in the womb", from Isaiah) and the presence of holiness before birth (The Visitation in Luke 1). Those are just the scenes that come to mind of the top of my head. There are more exhaustive treatments on Scripture condemning abortion.

In contrast, you'd have a much more difficult time showing Scripture endorsing abortion.

Gravatar Anonymous, where does it say in the Bible that using governmental programs to help people get medical care, or letting foreigners com into your country illegally because of hard economic times back home, is just as important as protecting innocent life from intentional and unjust destruction?

Gravatar Interesting post at the Catholic Thing./ And they're right, it is glorious to Bishops with spines. The only thing that would be more glorious is if it were actually helping to to stop Obama from being elected.

Gravatar I live in Michigan, where no bishop is by even the wildest stretch of imagination part of Austin Ruse's "large and lusty choir."

In this state our bishops are anonymous milqtoasts on the abortion/politician topic, always stressing that have been joyfully castrated by the pro-abort lobby here and really like it that way -- not really, they say it otherwise: that they NEVER speak as individual bishops, but always speak as a GROUP on political issues. That group would be the Michigan Catholic Conference, comprised of the seven ordinaries in the state. For nearly 30 years years Call to Action poster boy Bishop Untener was in that group and presumably he managed to shut them all up, and they've been gleefully wearing the muzzle all this time. I suppose most states are like this.

Sorry Austin, the 30 you count are a tiny minority of the 350-plus bishops in the United States. Less than 10 percent by my count.

To be sure, Raymond Burke is a giant among them, and some of the others have shown considerable courage.

But none of that is cause for rejoicing. Our Church leadership stands nearly silent in the midst of a horrific holocaust. I can't comprehend why JPII or Benedict didn't/don't fire half of them, right now.

The Vatican perpetuates the mess by naming chancery bureaucrats who were groomed by cowardly bishops to be new bishops, and usually they prove to be every bit as cowardly.

Bishop Burke is championing the cause of Fr. John Hardon, S.J., a priest who was utterly hated by most bishops. Fr. Hardon often said that the bishops today (he was speaking only 10 years ago) were the "most corrupt in the history of the Church."

That's the story, Austin. The pope and the Vatican need to take note that abortion remains as legal as ever, and the Church on the diocesan and parish level in the U.S. is more an enabler than an opponent. And he's in charge, watching it happen. Year in and year out.

Gravatar Hi,
Does anyone know if any of the bishops in Connecticut have made a statement about that court ruling overturning the ban on gay marriages? (I hope I'm not hijacking the thread here.)

Thanks,

Mary

Gravatar Over at John Allen's website he has an interview up with the archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria who is a strong supporter of Obama. It is a very interesting read. Abuja is the capital of Nigeria. This archbishop is one of the most prominent in Africa and very popular.

Gravatar Mary, Whispers In the Loggia has text of the response of Connecticut's bishops. Fifth post down at the moment entitled "On Marriage."

Gravatar I guess Adolph Hitler's marketing error, if one were to follow the Archbishop of Abuja's logic, was to embrace social justice (except for Jews). This guy sounds like a real lightweight. The people of Abuja deserve better. Tom

Gravatar Why do analogies always have to invlove Hitler?

Gravatar Why do analogies always have to invlove Hitler?

Because, according to sane people, Hitler's ideology and policies were evil, and therefore can be used in moral analogies.

Gravatar Because, according to sane people, Hitler's ideology and policies were evil, and therefore can be used in moral analogies.

Right. So many people believe in shades of grey and that there is no such thing as good and evil--except Hitler. It's the one thing people can generally agree on as an example of evil.

Gravatar Thanks, atheling and Scott for chiming in! I used the Hitler analogy to underscore the absurdity of the Archbishop's position on "social justice." As all of us here know, the Hitler analogy is routinely used by liberals when attacking George Bush. Tom
