The song "Violet Hill," which Coldplay released as a free download, has very obvious religious references. It's interesting to hear that religious imagery permeates the entire album. I'm curious to hear the rest!

I recall at one point long ago reading that Chris Martin (lead singer) is from a big Catholic family. Unfortunately, his wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a major Planned Parenthood advocate. I really adore Coldplay and think that Chris Martin seems like a really decent and good guy. We should pray for those who seem to be intrigued by or attracted to the faith - in whatever capacity - remember Oscar Wilde? Perhaps Chris is finding his way back to the faith and he'll bring the whole family along, Gwyneth can renounce her affiliation with PP and then we'll have super famous celeb reverts who've got our backs. Wishful thinking?

Can anyone explain what the lyrics mean?
After searching the web, it seems these are the more popular interpretations:
- About the British Empire and its decline.
- About the French Revoltion from King Louis XVI view.
- About Christianity losing its influence in the world.
- About George Bush and how he's not going to make it into heaven.
I think I'm going to start listening to country music - at least I know what they are talking about...

Ya, there seems to be a lot of suggestions for the songs meaning. Most people think its about the French Revolution - and some will go as far as to suggest the last week of Jesus.
While you could force the song to fit any of these themes, I believe ITS INTENT was to be written from the perspective of Tony Blaire. That would be most fitting with regards to Chris' vocal objection to Blair and the War in Iraq.
For instance:
Puppet on a string - with reference to how Blair would respond to Bush
my head on a plate, and other lines about the fall of a king - with reference to how people wanted him out of office.
lines about not telling the truth - Blaire was well known for being able to spin media
reference to Crusades - allegory to spreading freedom in the middle east
St. Peter still not calling his name - maybe something is still on his conscious even after his conversion.

5. Coldplay's lead singer told Rolling Stone that two songs on "X&Y" came from his religious upbringing. Name him.
5. Chris Martin:" 'A Message' and 'Til Kingdom Come' both come from having quite a religious upbringing. 'A Message' is taken from a hymn we used to sing called 'My Song Is Love Unknown,' and we'd say 'kingdom come' every week in the Lord's Prayer. One of the great things about being forced to go to church services is that we'd sing all these big songs. That's partly why I'm obsessed with getting everyone to sing along at our shows. It makes me feel like I'm a part of something."
"A Message" begins: "My song is love/ Love to the loveless shown/ And it goes on/ You don't have to be alone"
"My Song Is Love Unknown" by Samuel Crossman, published in 1664, begins: "My song is love unknown/ My Savior's love to me/ Love to the loveless shown/ That they might lovely be/ O who am I, that for my sake/ My Lord should take frail flesh and die?"
"'Til Kingdom Come" concludes:"For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come/ Until my days, my days are done/ Say you'll come and set me free/ Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me"
"'Til Kingdom Come" was originally written for Johnny Cash, who died before he was able to record it.
