As Diogenes has already pointed out, Pelosi's response time has so far been a lot more impressive than the bishop's: Almost two weeks for him to respond to her; less than a day for her to get back to him. How long will he take to get back to her this time?
Diogenes goes on to ask the disquieting question:
"So now we're left wondering what might have happened if the Archbishop of San Francisco had summoned Nancy Pelosi for a conversation about abortion a month ago, or 5 years ago, or when she was first elected to Congress in 1987. For that matter, we're left wondering how many other American Catholic politicians are still waiting for their bishops to summon their courage, clear their throats, and raise the issue for the first time."
To be sure, that query would have sounded a lot more trenchant two and a half weeks ago, before the sudden burst of episcopal directness on the subject. And, in a way, Biden's public backing of Pelosi on Meet the Press this week is a partial answer to Diogenes's question: If the bishops speak out, Catholic politicians may just defy them. What will our shepherds do then?

Has anyone ever been excommunicated for boldly and unashamedly promoting abortion?

I recall some Southern Archbishop wasn't shy about excommunicating powerful politican Leander Perez in the 1940s when he opposed Catholic schools being integrated. Tom

It would be nice to run along side your clock, a counter showing every baby that is being aborted during this time.

39 stps, actually that would be very sad. But a good reminder of what is at stake.
Thanks for the answer, Mr. Peters!
Is there a pool where we can place bets?

Not real sure I'm looking forward to this anyway. What will Archbishop Niederauer and Pelosi be discussing anyway. ArchB N. certainly has not been at the forefront of standing up for Catholicism and has shown very little backbone in his own Diocese. I'm more worried that he and Pelosi will set down for tea and scrumpets and discuss how best to surrender the Diocese of SF to the City Council that is demanding and suing to have the Church's teaching on homosexuality removed or for Catholics to be criminalized as a hate crime in SF if it isn't.

She is busy. It will be after the election. No after that she will be busy planning the corination. Maybe after that. No after that she has to push through the first 100 days of legislation. Maybe after that. No after that she has too ...
Oh I forgot this is a private matter. Archbishop Niederauer will not say anything. I hope your clock can count till then end of the age.
