The more I've been reading about the Republican candidates, the more I've been leaning toward Fred Thompson. He's got a pretty level-headed approach. On taxes, instead of the "Fair Tax" proposed by Huckabee which is essentially a national sales tax, he's proposed allowing folks the alternative to file a basic return with one of two flat rates, slowly weeding out the cumbersome system that's grown unwieldy over time. On immigration, instead of essentially permitting illegal immigrants to pay a fee and stay like McCain, he supports enforcing existing employment law and welcoming legal immigrants. On national security, instead of a hasty retreat from places around the world like Paul, he wants to make sure America is prepared to win in the war against terror. He has the support of the National Pro-Life group. And there's more. Across the range of issues, Thompson seems to provide the best overall candidate.
