Mr. Jindal looks wonderful. IF not now, may he have a higher office in the future and truly offer us hope and change.

He's 36 and graduated from Brown in 1991? That would mean he was about 19 at the time. Obviously a bit precocious as well.

I'm glad to hear Jindal's name mentioned on the national stage. As a Louisiana citizen, I don't want him to go on to VP just yet (one of my main motivations to vote for McCain in the fall is to keep Jindal in LA for 8 years. :) I'm selfish).
However, the article you quoted annoys me a little bit because of the insistence of the "Piyush" name. The Democrats in LA did that to try to make him seem like a Muslim. I hope that as Jindal's national prominence grows that his opponents resist trying to utilize racism against him.
P.S. Your link to the Catholic landmarks is off. It takes me to a page about the bishop in Sydney.Just thought you'd want to know.

He's not pro-life. He's not willing to try to make abortion illegal again. Even though he's just one politician who has no control over an issue that only the Supreme Court can decide on, I still say he's pro-abortion and he is procuring abortions left and right.
No communion for him, no salvation for him, no presidential run for him until he repents and makes a good confession for sins that are not his own and for laws that he refuses (and can't in reality) to change.

Rachel, your penchant for silly rhetoric aside, would you be kind enough to back up your claim that Jindal is not pro-life?

I would love to see him as VP, but I pray that Louisiana can make some strides forward as well. He is the best hope Louisiana has had in a long time! God bless! Padre Steve

He's ok with emergency contraception, which is certainly a bummer, but he's one step further in the pro-life direction than the man who might select him as VP...
In the meantime, we think this "presumptive" nominee garbage is no fun at all. We're either voting for Ron Paul or Joe.

I'm with you there, M. Swaim. Ron Paul is the guy I keep coming back to. It's too bad all this Dem. focus has made any competition on the Rep. side a mere blip to the public. *sigh*

"Rachel" is a troll. Bann him/her/it.
Now, about BJ. Post-it note to his file: Call him in 10 years. If Obama is unqualified based on his sorry lack of experience doing anything, BJ is only marginally less unqualified. Brains and coverting to the Faith are not enough. They're good, but they're not enough. Give him about 10 years.

I am no troll, Mr. Peters. Much of the sarcasm on this American Papist webpage has a conservative bent which distorts the positions of supposedly more 'progressive' Catholics. A healthy dose of liberal sarcasm doesn't hurt.

Okay. Maybe so. I'll just say, you don't sound funny. You sound shrill. And if conservatives have a reputation for bluntness, liberals have a reputation for shrillness.

I don't think he will be the VP, but I suppose there is a chance. It would be quite remarkable to have a Black Democratic Presidential candidate AND a Asian Republican VP candidate in the 2008 election. Just amazing. In regards to the Catholic Church I think the college of cardinals should have more members of color. I still cannot believe Pope Benedict did not name one voting cardinal from Africa during his first consistery. That is especially shocking when one considers the Church is so very strong and growing in Africa.

dave,
It seems a particularly American trait to constantly think of things in terms of race and proportion. Perhaps Benedict wasn't trying to make the College of Cardinals reflect some American ideal of statistical diversity, but was simply trying to name those he felt best suited to be his advisors and the ultimate electors of his successor.
Personally, I'd like to see more African and Asian Cardinals, and would love to see a non-European Pope in my lifetime, just to drive home the point that Catholicisim is not a European religion. Still, I'd much rather have a holy, faith-filled and effective Pope than someone who can check a different box than I in a census.

Tim,
There were editorials in newspapers across Africa about the pope not naming a voting age african during his first consistory. The papers in Nairobi, Kenya were especially critical. The American media did not notice this at all. I would argue that this pope is not connecting with people of color at all. After all he has yet to visit a country where people of color are a majority.

Emergency contraception is okay, as long as there has been no fertilization. The Church has no problem with "removing the products of a violent attack" provided that there is only sp&*m. I presume you knew that already.

I don't think he is being seriously considered. He is too young. I think his name is being floated to make McCain look like he considered more than just white males.
Still I think the fact that his name is floated helps him in the long run. just being talked about on the national stage makes it easier to generate a buzz when he does run.

Tim Ferguson,
I think he's talking about people who look like Cardinal Arinz. (Pope Benedict's friend, whom I *think* we can say the pope connects with.) Does that count?

What is being touted as 'emergency contraception', Plan B is not contraceptive. It also acts to alter the uterine lining and not allow a newly conceived human being to implant and thus receive nourishment. The Church certainly has a problem with it. The Vatican just reaffirmed that Plan B and such are not allowed for Catholics. A baby is not a disease anyway. Using Plan B could cause a stroke and lead to cancer.
Let's not play the game of changing the meaning of words in order to hide truth.

Tim,
Brazil is a multicultural country with a lot of people of african and mixed heritage but a slight majority of the population are descendants are of portugese, spanish, italian, and german immigrants. So no, absolutely no, Pope Benedict has NOT visited a country where people of color are majority. BTW race and affirmative action have been an issue in brazil.
dave |

Odd. According to Wikipedia (I realize it's not the most reliable source), non-white Brazilians do indeed make up the majority of the population, if only by a slim margin (slightly more than 50%). We can quibble on the issue, I suppose, but my real point is - why is race even an issue here?
Let's look at this another way - how many of the Cardinals that Benedict appointed are left-handed?
I don't know, and I suspect you don't know. I would posit that, in the realm of grace - where, I hope and suspect the Pope is operating - the color of one's skin is entirely irrelevant.
