I agree with quackery. I find if I rub a combination of toothpaste and olive oil on my abscesses, they dissapear super quick.

I agree. They can cure only small diseases like pimples, cold, digestive problems ad so on. But cannot cure cancer, TB and even viral fever
Not all alternative/complementary medicine is quackery. Take Ayurveda for instance. It is effective.

If we accept the expert in the article you pointed to, then acupuncture and herbal medicine do have value.
Seems that some people (both for and against 'complementary' medicine) are making faulty generalizations. The person who wrote that article makes such a mistake by lumping in herbal treatments (which can be effective for many conditions) with homeopathy (which has not been proven to be more effective than placebo).
"Professor Ernst is not yet convinced by homeopathy, either. Its effectiveness has neither been proved, nor ruled out, he says."
I don't give a flying hoot if he is convinced or not. Just don't let him stand in my way of access to homeopathy. If not for homeopathy I likely would still be suffering from insomnia and breakouts of large blisters all over my body that no doctor could adequately diagnose nor treat.
I treat my cats with homeopathy for their foul abscess caused by other cat bites. No antibiotics for them. Much less expensive and must faster cures... and this certainly rules out the placebo effect.
I completely agree with Anne.My dentist friend is given me one complementary medicine for some problem in my teeth,But after using that my pain got increased..Its troubled me a lot..So friends better aware before using complementary medicine.

Alternatives are good but not in all case. Senna is the herbal plant which can be used as an alternative medicine. Intake of senna should be taken with the guidance of doctor.

The idea that health is a steady-state that one can achieve is rooted in hygeine cults - i.e., it's a religious idea. Modern medicine has spent the last century & a half moving toward the goal of using treatments that work and discarding those that don't. Willow bark led to aspirin, foxglove to digitalis, while bleeding fevers went away.
I can only think that people who truly believe that their health can't be affected for better or worse by an outside influence, have never had a cut, or infection or broken bone, or are ignoring the fact that their bodies can be influenced by outside acts/events/substances. If it were all about what comes from within, wouldn't people just think themselves high instead of taking risks to buy drugs on the black market?
As someone who has dealt with birth defects and infections, I wouldn't wish a need for modern medical care on anyone. But I do strongly object to claims that I would be healthier &/or happier without the medical help I've received, or that I am somehow an inferior person because I got outside help for physically miserable afflictions.

From my opinion, not all complementary medicine are useless and dangerous. The one that have been tested dangerous only we can consider it dangerous. We cannot assume all of it dangerous only according to a few studies of the complementary medicine. There are hundred of thousands complimentary medicines out there around the world and we cannot just judge them as useless and dangerous.

The same survey found that 96% of respondents who sought the services of an alternative medicine practitioner also sought the services of a medical doctor in the past 12 months.
The fact is some "complementary medicines" are supported in the scientific literature and some are not. We can not generally dismiss "complementary medicine" any more than we can generally dismiss conventional medicine. An absence of support from scientific literature does not mean that something is invalid or valid, just that no one has published a study. Similarly, the fact that a certain complementary medicine did not work in a one particular instance for a particular patient can not be used to validate or invalidate that treatment for that condition or, certainly, "complementary medicine" (whatever that may mean) as a whole.

I just want to share the information that I have. Based on many researches that have been published, most of the research comes with this result;
25 to 35 percent of patients with cancer will develop depression.
Suffering from both a physical and psychological illness makes patients more ill and disabled. However, it has been proven that the signs of depression in cancerous patients may hard to be picked up since it is superimposed by the complication of the cancer itself.
What ever it is, what we need to do is to keep giving and show our support to them in order to improve life expectancy and increase the quality of life. We can do it!

I did not totally agree with this post. NOT ALL kind of complementary medicine are dangerous. In fact, some might work better that the modern, scientifically proven medicine.
The problem is, not so many studies has been done to investigate the effectiveness. Maybe the amount of the drug make it dangerous. I still remember on of my lecturer said, "It is the volume that differentiate between the poison and the remedy" and I found it very true when it comes to drug or medicine.
