I believe in redemption, but I have long believed the Gates Foundation was just PR.

I actually think the foundation does pretty good work, especially in Africa. He's actually spoken out against the administraton's stance on abstinence programs in Africa...I might write more on this i don't know. He can defend himself...

Heaven forbid if Gates held the intellectual property right or patent to the cure of cancer or aids.

But didn't Gates just start the Foundation after all the negative publicity around MS culminating in the antitrust lawsuits against them? And doesn't Gates and the majority of his main people give mostly to Republicans?
Also, I think someone like Bill Gates - or even Steve Jobs for that matter - have an inherent responsiblity because of their technological prowess to come out and make a difference when it comes to the Diebold et. al voting machines. Why hasn't someone like Gates or Jobs come out and said, "Yes, these machines suck. Because we believe in American democracy, we want to expose these flaws and help." Wouldn't have to be for one party or another, just for clean elections period.
Hey but a second look at that list, Uncle - and Costco doesn't belong on the top ten list of world's top environmental marauders does it? I think they were downgraded by Wall St for paying their employees well . . .
And you're right about the Dad - some say it was his idea to do the Foundation in the first place, and I'm sure they do do a lot of great work, but I'm not convinced yet that Gates himself is a humanitarian on his own . . .

Gates and his father have not seen eye to eye since the early 1970's. The "Microsoft Foundation", as some have called it, is little more than a PR organ and exists because Gates discovered that there were some things left in this world(namely, reputation and respect) which could still not be easily bought.

Gates is no Andrew Carnegie, and he never will be.

Politics of Microsoft: Gates and Allen are the hippies. (Helping African people and starting music museums aren't GOP traits...) Ballmer is the fratboy republican. They got involved in politics because Oracle and Hatch started going after them. Now they play the game just like every corporation does...

I think fallout's assessment is probably more correct - you are romanticizing, Philip! Bill is not a hippie, he's part autistic and sways back and forth. And Allen - yea he built the music museum on public land, and it'll cost you about 25 to go for a day. But even if you drive several hours to get there, like one couple I saw, he retains the right to close it down whenever he feels like for private parties. Don't forget he also forced a stadium down our throats - which the taxpayers paid for but yet he was able to sell the naming rights for . . . Yes, the Gates Foundation does good - but I think the general consensus is it is for PR purposes only. The Africans and other beneficiaries I'm sure don't care about this, and neither do I. But worth remembering when you start to feel warm and fuzzy toward Rainman.

Bill Gates, autistic? I am glad to know that. I was autistic too, Azpurger's Syndrome (The Little Professor syndrome) Turns our too much IRON in my brain was the likely cause. Why too much? Iron Overload Disease, Hemochromatosis, an inherited condition. I am a homozygote, both genes for the HFE factor that cause me to uptake dietary iron at double the usual rate. Very common in Northern Europeans/Irish. Too much Iron in the brain is bad. Parkinsons, Diabetes and liver disease just a few of the issues arising from too much toxic Iron. Maybe Bill should have his DNA checked.
