I have a feeling it has something to do with the transition of a usable mostly-text system in 1996 to this thing today.

I agree; I do not like or use Yahoo anymore. I find it to be too distracting to use at work. It's become oriented toward entertainment and is not helpful as a search engine or directory. I use it for only one thing: to find maps and driving directions quickly.
