The Andrew Turnbull Web Journal / The Idle Pen

Wal-Mart is opening a second store here, in the southern end of my town. The first Wal-mart store opened here in the mid-1990s after our K-Mart left it's location in the mall, and opened a Super-K on Eisenhower Drive, which is dubbed "The Golden Mile" by the locals here.

In the early 2000's Wal-Mart decided that it was to remodel and change into a Wal-mart SuperCenter, to compete with the Super-K across the street.

A few years later, after declining sales, the Super-K finally closed in 2004, thus leaving Wal-Mart as the only "discount" store in our town.

Meanwhile, while this all happened in the northern end of town, the south end of town basically had no discount store for years after Hill's and then Ames closed, leaving an empty shell of a store sitting in what I believe to be near-prime location. Yet the Wal-Mart SuperCenter, currently under constriction, is a mile down the road, and is in the middle if what used to be a field.
