On cable and satellite, you are less likely to notice such things, because a smaller percentage of the channels have it. When you use a plain old antenna on your TV like I do, though, it's awful: you see it on every single station, during every single show.
What might be a good thing is if the V-chip implementation in TVs (which processes the rating) had some sort of option to turn the rating feature on or off. What I mean is that such banners like the 'In Stereo', HDTV, ratings, etc... could be transmitted digitally instead of on top of the existing A/V feed, so that they could be enabled or disabled through an interface accessible through the TV's menus.
