I was also suspicious of Sibel Edmonds at first, but now I think she is totally cool with everything.

I think Sibel is a bright woman and she's learnt the 'stuff' over the last year or two. I don't think anyone should be suspicious of her.

xymphora - SE said "Or maybe a mixture of both" - when you ask "who is she referring to?" - maybe theres another interpretation to her comments - i.e. there are maybe *both* career and political appointees.
ive written a couple of posts speculating the same thing - here and here. sibel also points to the nexus of semi-legit organisation, narco and terrorist goups *and* lobbying. bolton, for example, was in Kyrgyzstan with GOP lobbyists in the mid-nineties. doug feith was a lobbyist for the turkish govt. and for some extra spice, today Michael Crowley promised us: "Later today or tomorrow we'll look at a question that has largely slipped through the media cracks about Abramoff, Tom DeLay, and potential Russian arms dealers."
fun times!

Hm. I think Edmonds is giving background which the public needs to hear. It counters the notion that these colonial exploits are actually in the name of American patriotism. The establishment of bases of in the "-stans", the expansion of interest in who rules in places like the Ukraine or elsewhere - so that this part of the world becomes the way Latin America has been for so long under the "Monroe Doctrine" and the "communist containment" doctrines.
This extension of American power, even if someone thought it was a good idea, is ultimately a way of stretching every resource to the breaking point, and is a threat to national security rather than a positive benefit. Why? Because it is unauthorized and unaccountable to the People (those inconvenient "voters" and taxpayers). The People also form a customer base for the narcotics which originate in these counties, and an America full of addicts subsidized by some new welfare system which kicks back the money to both the feds and the tinpot dictatorships they fancy is corrupt as hell.
Ms. Edmonds is under no obligation to explain everything. If she seems to have a handle on some conspiracy theory, that is because anyone can extrapolate from the bad behavior she witnessed as part of the system. Why does she go on record? Not necessarily because she is part of some conspiracy as Fintan Dunne would have it, but because the system is still flexible enough to have allowed dissenters as opposed to true believers to function in it. There is still an opposition (however out of the main power it is).
Not only that, her comments are provocative, and stir debate about the direction the US agencies are taking after the cold war, and after 9/11.
While the British may have operated as a colonial power, they stated explicitly that they were an empire; they also trained people in civil service and foreign languages to function in the Great Game. How secretive were they about their activities?
Now that the United States has adopted some of these earlier colonial policies, they are doing it more the way criminal gangs function, with a slippery story for the public. Troops have been committed on lies, and the publc treated to frights like anthrax. That means that the imperial wannabes are still uncertain they will keep their power, but willing to do anything to hold onto it, including treason. Sibel Edmonds shows how some of the game is played.

I think Sibel is risking her life everytime she opens her mouth. Whenever she speaks it reminds them that she holds a lot of information they don't want exposed. Thus I am grateful to her for anything she says that throws any light on these bastards, no matter how small.

I'd suggest that George Tenet and Richard Clarke were more prominent holdovers from Clinton to Bush than was Grossman.

As far as institutional connections in the State Department are concerned, I remember reading a quote from George Schultz, in the 1980s, concerning the Zionists, that they (Reagan) would have them so deep in the bureacracy that no one would would ever get them out. Read it and weep.

"Edmonds sometimes makes me a bit nervous as she seems overly adept with the terms and arguments of conspiracy theory for someone who is supposed to have been a lowly FBI translator (it's like she's been reading Peter Dale Scott!)."
Xymph, Sibel Edmonds might have been only "a lowly FBI translator" but translators, especially the multilingual ones - the polyglots, are a different breed of people. Their special acumen (and skill, if they are formally trained or have had substantial hands-on experience), apart from the facility to acquire and communicate in different tongues, is the ability to absorb and retain the terms and jargons of the different fields and materials they have to work with. Her familiarity with the "the terms and arguments" of things that have become part of her reality in the last 3-4 years shouldn't surprise anyone. Not only is this woman is a polyglot, she also comes across very sharp and articulate. Translators have also been known to come from many professional backgrounds. Perhaps there's even a law degree in her toolkit.

As a professional translator myself, I'd like to second pm's comment. Translators handle an unbelievably wide range of material, and further, translating it requires us to do a lot of homework. Consequently, a "lowly translator" can in just a few years amass a range and volume of information that would astound most people. I have no doubt that Edmonds has a head full of information that is particularly worrisome to the neocons.

The only thing I worry about is that she is orginally from Iran and that the somewhat racist public may feel some hesitation because of it...if her story gets the attention it needs.
Isn't it obvious that Zarcowi (the one-legged man) is UBL without the bush family baggge? When shrub/rummy invoked his name the other day, I felt very sad for the u.s. citizens because of all the misinfo we are fed.

More support for pm’s argument. I have been involved in the training of speech therapists, (who don’t only cure stutters but train pols to speak and interact..). These people are very like translators.
We tried to teach them exactly that: how to acquire familiarity and great expertise in (hopefully any!) speech / conversational / cultural milieu, through the grasp of deep and not superficial meaning, speech habits, etc. In any case, anyone bright and motivated does this when they study some topic, enter a new field and social circuit - e.g. economics, law, etc.

I for one was happy when Fintan outed himself as the comic of alt news.
