Snort is open source, and does IDS detection. You can download it and install it. No licenses or involvement of anyone required.
Any competent network or systems administrator can administer this stuff himself, no thir parties needed. Opening up your systems to third parties for your security is always a bad idea.
i use snort but i stopped upgrading it after they announced that some israeli company had bought them up. i also have the code, just in case.
snort is famed as the best ID tool, but there may be alternatives. snort is not magical. it merely a sophisticated network data analyzer and such a thing can be independently rewritten.
for me as a 1-computer user it is not such a big issue because i can decide what to use, but for people working in govt and corporate environs it may be because choice software is often a politicized and corrupt decision process having little to do with the technical merit of the tool ultimately selected.
hint: look at ntop (www.ntop.org). it is a traffic analyzer but could be used for ID as it generates pretty detailed logs, far more so than snort.
The difference between the ports and possible monitoring of the telephone system and intelligence computers is that everybody will know if something goes wrong at the ports – and will be quick to blame Dubai for it – while monitoring of secrets can take place for years without anyone having the slightest idea.
Add the fact that an Israeli company, based out of the Netherlands, controls the security at 36 US airports, including most of the international aviation US gateways, and you wonder what the hell is going on. The same for the proposed and up-coming smart card reader for the U.S. Registered Traveler program: it's made by a subsidiary of this same firm only this one is based out of the British Virgin Islands. The smart card reader will have access to the US passport database, and the documents used by a US citizen to procure a US passport.

Incidentally this same firm, ICTS International NV, was in charge of security at Boston Logan Airport on 9-11. If, according to published news reports, someone in Israel knew enough to warn Odigo employees in the WTC two hours early that there was going to be a hijacking, then why didn't those same people warn the security detail at Boston Logan Airport to prevent the hijackers from taking off?

So if there is any way of using a back door access method, ANYONE can read the source and make that back door.
You can use SNORT and never EVER have to contact the code owners.
