I read reports of oil discoveries in the Great Lakes Region of Africa in the 80's with reserves 3 times the size of the M.E, but it's another case of keeping it in the ground while stirring ethnic cleansing in the area (Rwanda, Chad, Uganda, Congo)

But otoh nor do I believe that blowing the entire mid east to kingdom come is some oil maven's idea of a profit maximising strategy.
X, I would love to agree with you, that the 'tough talk' about Iran, the concrete war preparations, Israel's mercyless bellicosity, the various Pentagon warplans are nothing more, than a clever tactic by the oil companies to keep the oil price higher.
Sadly that is not the case. It is way more elaborate than that, and the threat is real and the danger is real as well.
There's no faith required here; just look at oil companies profit statements, and, now that Yukos Oil was taken over by the Russian government, see how their oil reserve figures shot up.

To me, the whole issue of gas prices underscores just how controlled the Mainstream Media is by our government and corporate interests.
It seems obvious to me that the oil companies are engaged in collusion and gross profiteering.
Do I have any evidence? No, but common sense tells me I (and the rest of America) is being ripped off by the new Robber Barons.
I work for a manufacturing company, and our products are made from primarily one raw material. If the wholesale price for that raw material goes up, guess what, we DON'T make MORE profit, we make LESS!!
The only way way to make more profit than before the increase in materials costs is to raise the sales price of our products MORE than the amount of the raw material increase.
IE: If I make hammers, and the materials costs for each hammer goes up by $2, then only if I raise the price of each hammer by MORE than $2 will I make more profit than I was before.
The press keeps telling us that the Oil Companies are making so much money these days because the price of Oil is higher: it can't possibly be true! Only if the demand (gross sales) is higher, or if the profit margins have been increased, will the company see INCREASED profits.
Now, I know that demand is going up, but I don't think that explains the record profits we've seen lately. Therefor, their profit margins must have increased.
Normally, competition with other manufacturers will cause each company to limit their profit margin (or they will lose market share to the competitor who is willing to sell for less).

the fact that threat of war with iran causes oil prices to rise is a side benefit, not the primary motive imo.
Pulling out of Iraq is unthinkable for long term survival of the US economy but there has to be a threat to maintain the deployment.
