I had them mysteriously appear in my kitchen in early winter. I did everything, besides bug spray, and they eventually went away. don't know why. with my luck- they'll show up just as the mountain snows melt in a month!

Argh, the ants. The ANTS. At the worst, shortly after we moved into this house, I was finding ants in my bad. Dead ants encrusted in my hair when I woke up. I mean, dude. SERIOUSLY.
I need to second the Orkin rec. Nothing else worked, and those sprays just cause allergic reactions, and they really freak me out - what the hell is IS those? The sneezies! THE CHEMICALS! Orkin was reasonably non-reactive in that regard, and cheaper than I thought. But they LOVE to try to talk you into a yearly contract for every other month service: don't do it. It's unnecessary, until you know how it works.
I'm rambling.

Just break down and buy some noxious chemicals. Kill the suckers. Can you track them to their source?

I'll admit to being just a tad jealous that you are dealing with ants and other creepy crawlies. Up here, we are still frozen and I long for the day I find ants everywhere. Of course, when that day actually comes, I'll be the crazy lady with the shoe killing all the ants and cussing a blue streak.
Until then, I'll miss the ants and envy you!
