The inhalers they give for asthma also are prescribed for bronchitis or pneumonia, so they could help him with his recovery. But go with your gut instinct.
The chest xray is to rule out pneumonia. They'll also listen to his chest for crackles.
Hopefully he'll feel better soon though. I've heard the latest bug going around is pretty nasty and takes a while to recover from though.
