dunno leh, i only have sony ixus! and it works for me...
as for the housemate, maybe you could try talking to him again... like ask him to really listen, while u state your case, dont' interrupt until he has listened, ask him to think about it, then see if things can be arranged!
Canon is definitely the best value in its kind. I got myself a Kodak DX6340 only because:
- 3.4 Megapixels is more than enough for me.
- I don't like taking batteries out of the camera to charge it.
- It comes with a docking station. Which looks cooler than a USB cable. 
- Quality-wise, pretty good.
But each to its own. I checked out http://www.steves-digicams.com/ before making my purchase.
ahaha i also wana buy ixus coz so pretty... why all the good cameras so ugly one!!!
but.. got sony ixus meh? O.o :P

I like Nikon, although I'm using a CANON IXUS. ya I understand.. your hsemate.. haha sounds eereily familiar but now my hsemate way too ANAL!
