i'm delighted to hear stories about your parish events. i think if i were transplanted to Pittsburgh, it would feel the same as it does here in central illinois. Strongly Encouraged, indeed. cute sock, too.

As a lovely wedding gift (or, at least it was given sometime near the wedding), my dear friend Stacy gave me the _original_ Joys of Jello cookbook, which may perhaps be as fascinating as the 1973 edition.
But you really can't go wrong with the Jello chapter from the Lutheran Church Basement Women's Cookbook.

I HAVE that Jell-o book, because my mother has a copy. The pictures are so 70s-wonderful that I actually sought out my own copy of it (a buck at a used-book shop). I've made a few things out of it, the most often-made recipe for me is the Mandarin Orange dessert (jello, mandarin oranges out of a can, orange sherbet).
I'd love to make "Crown Jewel Cake" but it seems awfully daunting, and most of the places where I take food (potlucks at work, salad suppers with a women's group), I'd probably be roundly ridiculed for making something so very retro. Ah well.
I also find the "savory salad" recipes (like for barbecue jello) complelling but frightening.

Ooh...Jello!!! Now, that would make Jello Shooters extremely fun!!! A la Martha Stewart meets Auntie Mame! Of course, despite being in eBay rehab again, I just purchased the book on eBay... You know what that means: one less ounce of Jaeggerspun. LoL

Oh my.
I think I'll just thank my stars that my mother didn't discover that book while I was suffering round after round of braces related agony and had to eat much jello.
Of course, that's only topped by the TMJ (which the braces were supposed to prevent HAH!), where I literally lived on jello for weeks at a time as it was the only think I could manage to slip into my clenched jaw.
You'll have to let us know how the crown jewel cake turns out

Me 'n' jello are very good friends. I only like it when someone else prepares it, though. I'll be right over.
