Gravatar I have one of those little Susan Bates dealies too.

Never read the instructions. In fact, I think I threw them away with the packaging when I opened the thing up. I think now I'm glad I did; they'd only confuse me.

As it is, using it in my own, Unauthorized by Susan Bates way, it works really nicely - I use it regularly when I have to deal with the "decrease for armholes every six rows" or "Increase every fourth row" that patterns tend to have.

I use it this way: if I'm counting a pattern, I go up a peg each row until I reach the end of the repeat, then go back to one. If the pattern has more than ten rows, I put a peg in the ten and a peg in the ones. (Maybe exposure to the New Math with 'tens' and 'ones' places is actually useful for something.)

I use a second peg in the "increases-decreases" side to mark how many of either I have to do. I particularly like the "increases/decreases completed" side. And the "pattern repeats" side, well, I don't use it all that much, most of the things I knit are to length rather than x number of repeats of some pattern.

The only bad thing is that the pegs are so tiny and fiddly; it's easy to drop them and have them roll under the couch or something.

Gravatar Thank you for sharing that little bit of your family history -

I have been lurking for a long time and do mightily enjoy your blog, your writing style, your stories and your humor -

Thanks again -

Gravatar Mmm, polenta...

(Yeah, I get caught up in the simple things.)

Gravatar So do you think Pasta with Smoked Oyster sauce counts as honoring this date?

It's a no cook sauce -- trust me, Florida in August -- no cook is the way to go if at all possible.

Gravatar Can you play cribbage on the board as well?

When we played Scrabble with Caleb's relatives, they kept score with thingies that looked like this. This led to happy arguments about how exactly the scorers worked (even though some of them had been playing on these for over fifty years) and occasional 'mistakes' in the scoring. It was amazingly fun to be part of this, but I'm glad we didn't have those instructions to complicate things.

Gravatar What a punch line! I was captivated by your perspective before we made the connection ~ well done. Or, more appropriately, Brava!
