Last night's school potluck was a bona fide wake. Nobody dropped to the floor and wept uncontrollably, which would have been good, but only one wise guy pretended for 30 seconds that he had voted for Bush--then thought better of it as he was set upon by a nasty mob wielding white wine in brittle plastic cups, who were not in the mood for that sort of frivolity. Not funny! Not funny at all! We will never be able to look at you again, Todd, without having a fleeting moment of thinking 'BUSH SUPPORTER!!! BUSH SUPPORTER!!!! VERY BAD! VERY BAD!'
There was also much moaning about why people are always talking about the East Coast Elites when in fact we are so very shleppy. Where are these elites, anyway?
I think I'll really be o.k. when I can see the Mindless Bit O'Fluff II. Her arms are crossed, all's right with the world.

I'm at some measure of peace today only because my election day process took me to six different polling places, all run by older women in various basements around the neighborhood (church, legion hall, community center, school, etc.) and all hosting bake sales.
As much of a mess as we can make of democracy, I feel affirmed in my faith that it is a deeply human process involving cookies.
I likewise took some comfort in the fact that my voting district had the highest percentage of Kerry votes--88%!--in all of Wisconsin. So at least I'm surrounded by friends.
