Gravatar Welcome to the Mandoline Club. We're glad to have you.

I don't feel worthy of the Mandoline, but I am happy that mine has the old painted wood handle instead of the new polypro handle. It makes me feel vintagey. If I were buying a mandoline again, which I shan't do in this life, I would get one of the lighter, zippier Japanese ones.

The best sauce in the world is the Deglaze With Any Liquid sauce, after Sauteeing Any Protein. Just that one trick improves one's standard of living immeasurably.

Thanks for sharing the quotes as I had NO IDEA. Must go get summa that. xoxo Kay

Gravatar The yeast sock puppets are my favorite Good Eats schtick, which gives you an idea of how sophisticated MY sense of humor is.

The plunger is indeed a lovely device, but what you really need is the Alton Brown salt cellar. Your life is made more cold and bitter by your inability to use it daily.

Gravatar You HAVE to try Alton's Moo-less Chocolate Pie (available under that name online). Don't let the tofu deter you. You will instantly become a Cooking Goddess if you produce this for your family, trust me. Er, although it does have Kahlua in it, and may be too strong and, dare I say it?, too chocolate-y for the young 'un.

Gravatar I bet you can find those plungers way cheaper without Alton Brown's cartoon face on them. My mother swore by one of those years ago for measuring shortening. It's also great for peanut butter!

Gravatar I have just started reading your (knit) blog. (Can I just tell you I like it better than the ones that actually have knitting content all the time? THEY don't mention Alice Thomas Ellis and send me scampering to the library!) My coworkers and I were talking about Alton Brown this morning in my lab--and I am thrilled to hear he recommends mandolines. We have been wanting one, and that is a great excuse.

Gravatar Alton is the BEST! I'm so glad to find another convert. Hearing and seeing (in all the sock puppet glory) the science behind the food is wonderful.

Gravatar We are an Alton Brown family too though Myria looks askance at him sometimes We have learned and adapted many of his kitchen tricks and are better in the kitchen because of it. What's not to love?

Gravatar Count us among the AB addicts -- I'd been doing the mushroom quickwash forever, and felt so...so...validated when AB did it too. My husband loves to sit and flip through his latest book, never thought I'd see the day.

Gravatar I feel like an outsider ... No TV = No Alton Brown. But I like looking at his gadgets, and his writing is funny.

I'm just envious that you get to make bread. I'm a baker without bread pans.

Gravatar moment of irrelevance:
be arriving in galway around noonish june 21st, and i'll be flying back into cleveland on july 23rd. hope to frequent some old man pubs. really, that's all i want to do. kidding...

Gravatar (chants: alton, alton, alton) i think alton rocks. i love the kitchy way he does the humor. i was watching last night and he was comparing foil, wax paper, and parchment, for "en papiote" treatments (my spelling sucks, i know, lol), and it was funny! my SO doesnt' get it, but then, to him, food is all about the flavor, not how it works together. he's not "professionally trained" as he puts it, but i love the show, and i am! i'm not going to invest in a mandoline until my youngest is out of the house. i could just see him slicing his finger tips into the cucumber salad (shudder)

Gravatar Ohhh, another AB addict.

Gravatar sigh. we do love us some Alton....
so GLAD you are back!
I was beginning to worry....

Gravatar Has AB discovered the joys of sourkraut meatloaf?

Gravatar Oh, how we love AB at my house, too.

We watch his show as if it was a sitcom.

The Garlic Show! One of my all time favorites - especially the scene with "W".

The other one I love is the stuffing show where they come in with a stretcher to take out one of the turkeys! Hilarious.

Sounds like you have a great summer ahead of you.

Gravatar Oh god, we love Alton Brown. We will rearrange the dog's walks to watch it.

Got my Dad the first book for his birthday and he loves it. Apparently the book got my mother to give AB another chance (apparently she found him annoying).

Congrats on the mandoline. We might actually have room to add something to the kitchen assuming we get the house.

M
