That is an incredibly smart cat.
My survivor cat also became quite vocal after her littermate died. It was as if all his "pay attention to me!" energy transferred to her at his death.

My cats shared the house by living on two different levels. One was a "bottom feeder" and one was a "top feeder." The bottom feeder lived on the floor, the couch and the beds. The top feeder lived up in my loft bedroom, on the refrigerator and on the kitchen counters. When my bottom feeder died, the top feeder moved "downstairs."
Good luck with the kitten hunt! Er, you DO know we'll be expecting pictures, right? Lots of pictures. Lots.

Oooh, a new kitty! How will you break the news to Lila, or has she already figured it out? I'll join the chorus: pictures please when the new one arrives!
The older child has been pestering me for a cat for months now. He's somewhat satisfied with the creepy, animatronic FurReal kittens I purchased for him and his sister. I just can't bring myself to tell him that his Dad will never let another cat into the house after the loss of the only feline he ever loved, Grizabella the Glamour Cat (Grizz, Grizzy-Belly).

Edited to add: Wow, was I a poor reader! Lila is displaying her maturity by actively participating in the selection process--good for her. But I bet she's concealing much snark...and who can blame her?

We have a Balinese. She follows us around complaining about the weather, the food, the poor training of the help (us). Her big blue eyes are crossed and she can open swinging doors (she's never given up on latched doors, so all ours have scratch marks on the bottom). She doesn't like most people, but she likes us a lot. She is, as the kids would say, the bomb.

The CatMan votes for an Abyssinian (also painfully smart) and I'm chiming in for a Russian Blue or Scottish Fold (give me calm, loving, and cuddly every time!)

I have a garden variety tabby cat, and he is weird compared to my first cat. I once commented to someone that my current cat is not normal. She looked at me solemly and said, "There is no such thing as a normal cat."
How true.

I grew up with Siamese cats and loved them. Mine weren't quite as smart as you Balinese, however, but still pretty clever.

Love your late cat's name. We had an orphan cat named Annie found under a pile of trash in an abandoned apartment. She was a little retarded, owing to abuse and neglect, but our dog at the time looked out for her . . . They were a great pair . . . Good luck with the new kitty.
