Strangely, I suddenly want to add 5 adjectives to every noun I use in the next section of my thesis. Hmmm. Apparently I don't take direction well...

You could, of course, shut the kittens in a different room (or just in a different part of the house), and paint with the door open, and without paint fumes.
Katie has a simple idea. I was going to suggest one of those ventilators that make the wearer look like The Fly.
Katie beat me to it also. I've got puppies - not as nimble as kittens, but just as helpful and that's what I have to do.
This has become my favorite blog - I'd go into withdrawals if you were to succumb to fumage.
Oh. And I'd feel badly about you too, of course. 
please, please do not die of fume complications Dr. Brannen, I think that I would probably not survive the rest of the semester, much less the 7 semesters I have ahead!
Could it be that Sam saved, amongst his souvenirs, an oxygen mask and a bail-out O2 bottle from his A-4 carrier pilot days? You could use that to combat the fumes whilst painting.
From his bail-out Sam saved no 02 bottle or oxygen mask--only his ripcord: of limited use in painting amongst kittens.
