I admire chimney swifts almost as much as carrier pilots. Imagine their fledging flight: a vertical ascent up a two or three story chimney. And their landings are not bumpy either.

I loves me some kitten stories, and the chronicle of your handmade house is charming.
I also want to thank you, once again, for the goofy links you give us; I love Chaucer's blog and WierdWords is now bookmarked.
Yea for Literate People!

Oo! and bats in the chimney too, right?
And what about frogs or toads in your basement?
Mmmm.. spring in old houses. Wonderful.

A mole?!? I might not even recognize a mole in a gym bag. My Older Cat is getting springy, too. She's remembered her cat furniture and runs up it to play atop it rather than just on her chair.

If you REALLY loved the kittens, you'd get them a bat.

We have families of chimney swifts in our home EVERY YEAR (from what I've been told, it's a damn fine chimney). This frustrates my dog, Ophelia, who can hear the swifts...but cannot get to them. Then, she uses non-verbal communication tactics (a combination of whining, looking, pawing and whining some more) to convince me to help her...and by "help her," I mean "shine a flashlight, like a loser, up the chimney so we can hear the swifts start to screech louder, thus convincing both Ophelia and I that they are indeed up there." I now keep a flashlight in one of the end-tables. I hope your cats can't read this.

Geez. I always get bees in the chimney every year. I'd rather have swifts. Well, actually I'd rather NOTHING from the outside world get in without my express permission, but there you are.
A mole? Good Gawd. Poor kittens. You've probably stunted them for life.

the kittens look sleekly eager for interesting experiences..
All this reminds me of a jingle for an extermination company from about 40 years ago:
"Bats in your belfry?
Mice in your rice?
Cockroaches in the kitchen?
None of that's nice!
Moths in the carpet, termites below,
whatever your problem,
let the Rose man know!
Call Rose Exterminators,
for business or home!"
