I think it speaks of your overall "mom quality" that you both wish to adopt the "guard-dog" position and maintain your distance from the water, allowing your child to enjoy risking his life in the water.
But, perhaps you should make him watch some of those Japanese-inspired horror movies that borrow from the general "legend" of the drowned ghost. It is not something I aspire to be, and it has scared me away from anything deeper than a shower. :o)
Perhaps you should teach the child Tom Waits' The Ocean Doesn't Want Me Today to balance his fearlessness with your motherly terrors.
At least you're prepared for suitable mourning.

I'm with you about the water, especially the Atlantic, the ill-tempered younger sister of the Pacific. She's a moody sea. But maybe your son has a better relationship with her than I do.
