I read #3 as "went for a long walk, despite the lesbians of the morning". I think there may be something seriously wrong with me.
Or I need glasses.
I'm glad you're having a vacation. DO NOT LOOK at the water. It's just waiting for you to look before it Gets Up To Something Very Bad.

I think it speaks of your overall "mom quality" that you both wish to adopt the "guard-dog" position and maintain your distance from the water, allowing your child to enjoy risking his life in the water.
But, perhaps you should make him watch some of those Japanese-inspired horror movies that borrow from the general "legend" of the drowned ghost. It is not something I aspire to be, and it has scared me away from anything deeper than a shower. :o)

Perhaps you should teach the child Tom Waits' The Ocean Doesn't Want Me Today to balance his fearlessness with your motherly terrors.

At least you're prepared for suitable mourning.

Your vacation sounds fantastic, including both excellent books. How do you come across these excellent books?
I'm with you about the water, especially the Atlantic, the ill-tempered younger sister of the Pacific. She's a moody sea. But maybe your son has a better relationship with her than I do.

So Amazon says (about the EXCELLENT book) :
What do customers ultimately buy after viewing items like this?
42% buy Nancy Crow by Nancy Crow $40.95
29% buy The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life by Erving Goffman $9.97
21% buy American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Gardening by DK Publishing $37.80
8% buy How to Bake: Complete Guide to Perfect Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Tarts, Breads, Pizzas, Muffins, by Nick Malgieri $23.63
So other Americans who are interested in theory of theatre space are also interested in quilting, horticulture, baking, AND social psychology??? Yeah, I bet they're into Medieval Drama too : )
PS - Ever think of doing a blog on EXCELLENT books (scholarly and otherwise) - like a best of list?
