My brother lives in Santa Barbara, a no-growth community on the beach in California- a very popular place to live. People pay as much as a thousand dollars a month to just share a tiny bedroom in a large house (sharing the bathroom with as many as a dozen other people)- basically a small 9X10 bedroom rented out for as much as our house payment for our five bedroom house in Colorado Springs.

Actually, Patrick, the windward side is probably more expensive -- especially Kailua. People can usually afford to buy homes out in Ewa or Kapolei, but the commute and traffic are horrible.
