Gravatar It's just a fee, not a tax, right? What's the problem?

Well, the truth is that tax-exempt property is a bit of a problem, receiving public safety and public works for free. I'd like to see a discussion of just what property taxes are for and who should pay them. If they were limited to only paying for actual property-related costs, like streets and police, why shouldn't everyone property owner pay?

But I suspect Jay Benanav is just shopping for another revenue source.

Gravatar Aren't church's tax exempt property too! Maybe we should have church's pass around the basket twice. Once for the church, and once for a fire and police user fee. . . .

Gravatar Coleman's not even in office yet and the left wing of the left in Saint Paul are looking for pockets to pick...

Gravatar As big a moron as Randy Kelly could be, I'll never regret voting for him over Benanot. My Lord, Jay, what's next? Taxes on babies and kitties?

Of course, it's not like Universities add anything to Saint Paul. Let's just get rid of 'em. Ship Metro State, St. Thomas, Mitchell, and Mac off to Woodbury.

St. Paul can keep St. Kate's; everyone knows girls don't cause problems. :P

Gravatar The other aspect of this is what impact will this BS tax on students have in other communities. You can bet towns with colleges all around the state will be pushing something like this.

If the colleges were not around, would property values near Hamline, St. Thomas, Metro, and other schools be as high?

What about the 37,000 students in the city that add to the tax base?

This is BS!
