One thing Armenians are not aware of is how consistently they underestimate the Turks. This Turk is nothing unusual. Many of the governors and pashas in Armenian-populated provinces such as Bitlis, Van, Erzerum, Diyarbekir, Adana etc where highly intelligent, cunning men, with a much higher level of education than the average Armenian, always in tune with the latest developments in Europe and even wearing the latest fashion accessories. Some were converts into Islam from Balkan stock and had a more 'European' appearance than the average Armenian. Many Armenians especially party and community types prefer to this day the caricature of a backward oriental fez-and shalvar wearing pot bellied Ottoman despot. While this makes them feel good it is nothing but the mentality of the preverbial ostrich. Incidentally TAT has some valuable observations from European diplomats like Sir Mark Sykes. Armenians could do well to study those observations because I think many of them are true
