Now isn't that a wonderful thing to do? While everybody else was involved in trying to rescue and bring aid to the victims this woman was looting their personal possessions - dumping their clothes so that she could steal their furniture and then claim it is ART! Art my ass - this woman should be locked up - she's nothing but a common looter, making money out of other people's misery and misfortune.

I don't think dr. a. has it right...
This woman lived through the disaster herself, and the drawers she's using in her art installation were salvaged from trash piles... These were the ruined things that people had thrown away...
I think seeing them all lined up makes a powerful statement about the unfathomable numbers of people whose lives and possessions were irretrievably destroyed.

... anyway you only have her word for it, that they were salvaged from trash - so who's to say that given half a chance the rightful owners would not have reclaimed their property?

dr. a., I would encourage you to read the articles on the site that arbroath linked to... Your arguments have no foundation.

I already have - and yeah isn't it wonderful: identify your drawer and share your story with us. Really heart-warming stuff. I don't see anything saying identify your drawer and we'll pay you so may dollars for the privilege.

Ooh! Heated debate!
I hope you don't mind if I sit on the fence for this one.

I am just going to put my 2 cents in. Dr. A if you please go to http://www.floodwall.org/Fact%20...act%
20Sheet.doc On the last page you will see that this is not for profit orginization. Which by the way is why their web address has .org on the end. Not for profit! Take a few minitues to read everything before making yourself sound like a dumbass. Of course by mocking this as not being art already makes you a dumbass.

I don't think calling dr. a. a "dumbass" is going to advance the debate... Art is in the eye of the beholder, and dr. a. doesn't have to like the artwork... But I'm really curious about why dr. a. has so much misplaced anger toward it when his/her arguments clearly have no basis in the facts.
And, Arbroath, if you're going to sit on the fence, could you bring us some popcorn in case this drags on? lol

... well now, the first thing I read on that document is Organization Fee:
$10,000.00
Prorated Tour Costs:
To be determined (not to exceed $20,000 including crating/shipping)
... so how is that NOT FOR PROFIT? - there's $30,000 for a kick-off!
The web site may be a dot org but I don't see Jana Napoli dot org - do you?
This exhibition will be accompanied by a 100-page catalog with color reproductions of the exhibited work, documentation, oral histories, and essays by artists, and scholars ... these 100-page catalogs don't come free either.
Artist Jana Napoli spent her morning hours each day for two months collecting all 600+ drawers. Each drawer was marked, on the back, with the physical address of where it was retrieved. Each drawer has been numbered, photographed, and cataloged -- that's not art, she didn't create these drawers, she's a lost property office!!
As a community partner in the project, YA/YA is serving as the fiscal agent to Floodwall, LLC and accepting grants and charitable contributions on the behalf of Floodwall.
YA/YA is classified as a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization BUT I don't see anywhere that it says Floodwall or Jana Napoli is a non-profit organisation. Nor do I see it said that these grants and charitable contributions are going to be channelled back into a Hurricane Katrina relief fund.

lol dr. a., the information you posted proves MY argument... I'm sorry that you're unable to understand what you've just read...
And I can see that you're very upset about the issue (still curious as to why) but I won't keep egging on the debate, since it's clear that your emotional reaction is preventing you from seeing the facts...
Peace to you.

A US woman whose frozen embryos were rescued from a flooded fertility clinic weeks after Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans is due to give birth.
Her embryos were among 1,400 stored in canisters of liquid nitrogen retrieved by police in boats in 2005.
--- just as well Jana Napoli didn't get her hands on these !!!!

It is interesting to hear what people imagine of another. We had the families we have found so far come to the installation in Baton Rouge this weekend. I it was beautiful for us all to honor their courage & loss & speak together of a hopeful future. We are still all very afraid here in N.O. It must be hard for someone who has not had this experience to understand. We thank
you for thinking of us.
